There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

Keep in mind there is a lot of increased pro-Trump turnout as the GOP made a significant effort to find those in 'social alignment' with Trump who had never bothered to vote before.
The dem early voting is out pacing the amount of republicans.

It doesn’t matter which party is voting more - it’s more fundamental than that. Voter participation in the US has been too low and apathy is a cop-out IMO. We can do better and this election is showing us that.
Saw a graphic last night that showed when voter participation is high, a Democrat wins the election, and when turnout is low, a Republican wins. There are only two exceptions going back to Clinton's first term and that's Bush vs Gore and Trump vs Hillary. (And we know how those went.)

Early voting in battleground states of voters 18-29:

    Florida, 2020: 257,720 -- 2016: 44,107
    North Cackalacka:, 2020: 204,986 -- 2016: 25,150
    Michigan, 2020: 145,201 -- 2016: 7,572

Someone convince me that this age group turning out in enormous numbers for early voting is voting for Trump and/or Republicans in the Senate.

    Police are preparing
    =================
As campaign season heads into its fraught, final days, police departments across the country are bracing for Election Day, mobilizing officers as they prepare for the possibility of voter intimidation, unrest or violence.

These preparations include extensive planning exercises, efforts to monitor early-voting sites and concerns about how long any unrest could last if the election results are not immediately known or challenged in court.

While law enforcement agencies routinely plan for elections, officials say this year’s preparations are unusually extensive because of the sheer levels of anxiety and toxicity across the country — with fears that a modern American election could give way to potential violence.

“I don’t think we’ve seen anything like this in modern times,” said Andrew Walsh, a deputy chief with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department..........

Well, I went and did in person early voting today. Easy peasy. Was in and out in 10 minutes. They need to do this every election. Evey state. Although I wouldn't mind mail in or secure online voting.
Serious question: Does Vienna vote separately from the rest of Fairfax County or is it a county-wide thing like it is with parishes in Louisiana? Either way, how many polling locations are there?

Well, there are fewer polling locations than a normal election day, but the early voting locations are open from Oct. 13 through the 31st. Normally Vienna has several polling locations, but for early voting we're actually voting the next precient over. It's Fairfax County. But FC is massive and there are several locations. You can search online for the location you need to go to by entering your address.

All I had to do was put my name and address on a form, show it to the poll workers who verify the state issued ID, which in my case was my DL. Then I picked up my ballot, made my selections at one of the tables and then dropped the ballot in the machine to record my votes, then that was that. Pretty easy. Short line. The fact that early voting is three weeks long helps alleviate the lines.

Thanks. I was just curious. In Orleans Parish there are only five locations for early voting but no matter your ward and precinct, you can go to any of the five. They just swipe your ID, print out a sticker and have you sign next to the sticker. Granted, Orleans Parish is still smaller than it was population-wise pre-K, but people were still waiting over an hour at what's likely the least busy of the five as of Wednesday. Glad to hear VA isn't pulling shirt like TX, GA, etc.. I'm kinda miffed that I didn't get my "I voted" sticker though. I'd been collecting them for every election since I got my right to vote back.

So, astronaut Kate Rubin just cast her vote from the International Space Station. She cast her mail in ballot in Harris County, TX. Are they going to disallow her vote because it was cast from space?

DC mails your sticker with your ballot so you can wear it on Election Day.

When Louisiana had the blue dog "I Voted" stickers, they let me have like 5 of them. (2016, I think...) It figures we wouldn't have them this time around at all.

Current early voting wait times in Broward County. Green means under 15 min. Yellow means under 30, red means under 1 hour.
