There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

The totally stupid thing about all of this is the post office problems all go back to legislation from 2006.

In essence it locked pricing and forced them to put back 5 billion a year for pensions when. They never finished with that much in profit how did the government expect this to work is beyond me.

The post office and their losses are a direct result of this legislation.

John Oliver did a great piece on this the week the new Trump idiot took over. It is truly great and breaks it all down and is funny.

So yeah it has swearing so a warning.

All the other stuff about the lack of profit stems from this. All of the administration talk of lack of profit and need to fix stuff stem from this scam for the post office to pre pay pensions and health benefits that then would be applied to the national debt.

Did you know that no other entities pre pay retirement and healthcare benefits? Not public or private not one!

It has long been the Republican goal to take any working government service and break it. Thus justifying privatization so their donors can profit.

I get that but common sense tells you if you never had a close to a billion dollar profit how on earth do you come up with five times that.

2005 is the last year they finished in the black.

This is all stupid and goes way back the the w administration.

USPS to suspend all changes ...guess Dejoy wasnt looking to go before Congress to lay out in plain detail what most already know.

Good first step. Now would also be a great time to announce additional funding, the hiring of employees, and the installation of sorting machines and whatever else is needed to handle the influx of absentee ballots and the holiday rush that follows soon after.

Cowards can’t even cheat right. I firmly believe if Trump wouldn’t have flat out admitted that was their motive they would have continued. But like everything else the dotard does he can’t help himself from bragging

Anyway, for those who trash the USPS-

The USPS is and has been hamstrung by Congress for years.

Their draconian pension funding requirements that Congress makes them adhere to alone make it impossible to even come close to breaking even.

Couple that with the fact that they have to serve every community regardless of size at the same price and you will be the red no matter how efficient they are.

Imagine if we made Fedex and UPS fund their pensions (oh wait they don’t have one) Or fixed their pricing (oh wait that is illegal).

    Simple comparison-

I called Fedex and asked how much or a letter to be sent to New York standard ground. 14 days and $6.75.

Post Office? 5-7 days and $.52

    Seems fair to the taxpayer....

From what I have read they would have to be hiring right now (or within the next few weeks) to get geared up to to handle the holiday season.

Not only that, but tens of millions of Covid tests that have to go to a lab. To ramp up testing to the degree needed, we're going to need every courier service on Earth, running at 110% capacity.

Come to think of it, I noticed a Now Hiring sticker on the back of a delivery truck the other day.

I have no idea how this slipped my mind. This is absolutely critical.

I wonder what that means though. For example, they can stop additional changes, but keep what they already did in place. Are they going to reverse the changes they already did? For example putting back all the sorting machines they removed, reinstate overtime, etc?

I think Dejoy already said he would authorize overtime for the election.

Yes from what I read they will reverse course.

This could be the nail in her coffin.

    Well that should do it.

Especially when you consider just how rural the area is.

For the life of me I don't get how this is not viewed as a attack on us veterans. The post office employees for the most part served. Then you consider all meds from the VA come thru the post office.
