There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

Trump presidency has been such a whirlwind that apparently I missed that we added two new states

I was just reading that. I thought it had to be bullshirt because there's no way people would be so willing to tank their reputations with stuff like this. Then I remembered that their reputations will be more solid with 74 million people after this whole thing is over with. What an ever-loving embarrassment.

Just remember that the collective memory of the public in the U.S. is so short that within months the Biden administration will be criticized for not "reaching across the aisle" and "compromising" with the 106 U.S. representatives (a majority of the GOP membership!!!!!) who supported disenfranchising all voters in at least four states for the crime of voting against Donald Trump.

Freaking this ☝. Where are all the Rs who were so concerned Ds would... (*gasps and clutches pearls*)... break democratic norms by packing SCOTUS? It's almost as their newly discovered concern about the future of democratic rule and balance of power was disingenuous? This is where the GOP's been headed for years, and if you've been waiting for them to turn a corner, you've only been disappointed. It's disheartening to see how few of its leaders have displayed anything resembling integrity in recent years. Georgia is so crucial right now.

The craziest thing is that the Texas suit is much more like the "New California" claims than any real claims. That's where they are - that's what Trump has done to them. They're literally in a different reality.

The 106 number is outdated. They've added 20 more GOP Congress members since yesterday. Insanity.

America's enemies are sitting back laughing right now. They don't have to lift a finger to hurt us. Republicans elected to federal offices are doing a fantastic job of that all on their own. Every last one of them is on board with what is going on if they aren't speaking out against it publicly. Even the Mittens Romneys of the party need to stop saying stupid things like "as long as they're just pursuing all legal options," and other similar lame things because they're giving oxygen to the fire that is the 80% of 74 million people who voted for Trump and it's going to burn us to the ground.

Trump is probably masturbating to OANN right now as this stupid TX suit gets more and more attention. He has to see this as his only way to keep from getting prosecuted by Biden's administration - and probably even state courts if Biden can stop them - since it'd have so many insane people, quite literally, ready to spill blood over it.

Lin Wood is still at it. He and the Kraken have no problem humiliating themselves. When you're too insane to be part of the Giuliani/Ellis Elite Strike Force...well, you're like really, really insane.

ETA: I'm not trying to be alarmist about things, but I really do think there is going to be some violence when all of this is finally settled. Sure, it might not be that 74 million people are going to shoot up a democratic office somewhere, but there are 750,000 people who follow Lin Wood on twitter and believe to the bottom of their hearts that what he is doing is righteous (some really believe he was ordained by Christ to try and overturn the election). These people are insane and like that GOP chairwoman in AZ showed us, they are looking for people who are willing to die for this cause. The fact that they're being played by people who are a lot smarter than them and much more evil doesn't make me feel any better about it.

"America's enemies" right now are Trump and the Republican party.

But yes to everything you said.

Elections have consequences, It wouldn't have been stolen had we won in 2016...just sayin.

    "Don't boo, Vote!" - July 27, 2016, President Barack H. Obama

Nah. We'd just have 6 justices now.
I have zero doubt that Moscow Mitch would've simply refused to hold a vote on any SCOTUS nominations. They really ought to just rewrite that clause in the Constitution to read that the President can nominate SCOTUS replacements only so long as his party controls the Senate.

I don't see how to place value in enthusiasm for trying to destroy the system because you don't like its results. The fight against the election result is shameful, anti-democratic, and will be judged so by history.

In 2016, the Senate majority simply refused to consent to a Supreme Court vacancy nomination. It challenged tradition and good-governance, but it was within the rules. What should the Democrats have done that would have looked any different than this ridiculous, pathetic display we're seeing from (some) Republicans now?

Destructive spasms against our constitutional system because we feel slighted by a result are the part of the problem, not the solution. It also misses the fact that more than 1/3 of voters don't identify as Republicans or Democrats. There's really not that much value in boosting enthusiasm in your own committed base while showing the more independently minded voters (who often win elections) that you're bat-shirt crazy and willing to pull the temple down for something as foolishly short-sided as a single election.

Well, yeah. I didn't say it was a good thing. Only that it's effective.
And if it cements one-party rule (your party), why wouldn't you?
