WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to head the U.S. Transportation Department said Wednesday electric vehicles should pay to use roads.

Most revenue for federally-funded road repairs is collected through taxes on diesel and gasoline, which EVs do not pay. "They should pay for use of our roads. How to do that, I think, is a little more challenging," said Sean Duffy, a former Republican lawmaker at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee.........

I don't disagree with finding a way for EV's drivers to also chip in on revenues for road maintenance, just not sure how you'd do it.

A gas tax is pretty simple -- the more you drive, the more gas you use, the more taxes you pay when buying the gas. I assume most EV's are recharged at home, though, so, again, I'm not sure how do you find a way to measure road usage.

Maybe the tires? I guess they could throw an extra tax on EV tires every time they need to be replaced.

Are EV tires different?

Also how much would the tax have to be?

You put gas in the car every week or two how often do you get a new set of tires?

It appears that special equipment/plug is needed to charge the EV for home and public

Figure if a way to add a charge for charging?(ha!)

This is the added cost of doing the right thing

On EE someone told a story about a county (in Georgia maybe?) with a severe drought, the public was asked to cut back on their water usage, the public did, the water company was making a lot less money and jacked up their rates to compensate

They already do in Ohio. The tag fees for hybrids are at least double regular vehicles.

But here is a better idea make the gas/diesel guzzlers pay more. Drive EV/hybrid development.

Here, the vehicle registration tax for EVs and hybrids is about half of that for gas-powered vehicles, while diesel vehicles incur significantly higher costs, collected every six months.

On top of that, there are taxes on gas, diesel, and electricity usage. Electricity prices here vary significantly depending on the time of day and weather conditions—on windy days, prices can drop to nearly zero due to the extensive offshore and onshore wind farms. Many people take advantage of this by using intelligent appliances on timers during the night when electricity is cheapest.

This tax structure is designed to promote the transition to renewable energy sources. Over the next five years, further adjustments will align with these goals, including an expected ban on the sale of new gas and diesel cars by 2030.

Some of the taxes collected on electricity are allocated to funding the expansion of the EV charging grid, as well as road maintenance and other infrastructure projects. This ensures that the transition to renewable energy and electric vehicles is supported by the necessary infrastructure while also addressing broader public needs.

I think tire's for EV's need to be thicker, as EV's are heavier than gas powered cars (I think I read that somewhere). But I just suggested them as something that has to be purchased periodically due to road usage. Not sure what the appropriate tax would be.

For arguments sake, the Fed gas tax is $.184/gal (diesel is $.244/gal). Let's just say cars get an average of 25 miles/gal, so that $.184/gal turns comes out to about $.007/mile. I just googled that EV tires get from 20000-40000 miles depending on use, so let's just say they get 30,000. If you multiply 30,000 miles $.007/mile you end up with $210 tax on a set of four tires.
