WASHINGTON — An FBI informant has been indicted on two counts of allegedly feeding the bureau false information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Alexander Smirnov, 43, disliked Joe Biden and was arrested in Las Vegas after returning from a trip overseas, according to the Justice Department. The case grew out of the special counsel investigation being led by David Weiss, who is also leading the case against Hunter Biden. Weiss had been appointed by then-President Donald Trump as the top federal prosecutor in Delaware.
The 37-page indictment alleges that Smirnov had been a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010 and "provided false derogatory information to the FBI" about both Bidens after Joe Biden became a candidate for president in 2020.

Smirnov allegedly told the FBI — falsely — that officials with Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company that Hunter Biden worked for, had told him they hired Hunter Biden because he would "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems." Smirnov allegedly told the FBI — again, falsely — that Burisma officials had told him they paid Hunter Biden and Joe Biden $5 million and that it would take investigators 10 years to find the illicit payments to Joe Biden. A source familiar with the matter told NBC News that Hunter Biden does not know the individual who was charged and does not believe he ever met him.

According to the indictment, Smirnov's claims to the FBI, which he first made in June 2020, "were fabrications," and, in truth, he only "had contact with executives from Burisma in 2017," when Joe Biden had left office as vice president and "had no ability" to influence U.S. policy.

"In short, the Defendant transformed his routine and unextraordinary business contacts with Burisma in 2017 and later into bribery allegations against [Joe Biden], the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties for President, after expressing bias against [Joe Biden] and his candidacy," the indictment alleges.

I'm so not surprised that the claims this person made were nothing but lies. There's no evidence to back it up.

Could this person be where all the lies about collusion and bribery originally come from?

The lies originally came from Russia. Rudy is known to have met with a Russian intelligence officer in Ukraine before the 2020 election. It would be interesting to know if this guy has any ties to Russian intelligence.

Yes, the person who was arrested today is russian. In fact, he was supposed to be working for America but it turns out, he was working for russia.

    But it gets more interesting.

This is the guy the republicans have touted as their impeccable FBI informant. This is the guy the republicans base all their lies about Joe and Hunter Biden on.
This is the guy who the republicans say was going to prove there was some sort of collusion and bribery.

The republican's whole investigation and accusations are falling apart. Just like most of what trump does. Yes this is all trump. It's part of his election strategy. Just like it was in 2020.

Comer accepted false testimony and publicized it. He should have to publicly apologize to Joe and Hunter.

If Weiss indicted Smirnov today, they’ve known for quite a while about the lies.

I would also like Weiss to be questioned about how long he knew for sure that the FD-1023 was full of lies.

I’m suspecting that’s the reason the FBI pushed back so hard about giving the FD-1023 to the GOP. Knowing the document was full of lies, and it was evidence in a case they were building, they clearly wouldn’t want it out in the public domain.

Why did it take so long to investigate it? The timing seems fishy. Did Weiss wait to start investigating it until after the shirt hit the fan with Hunter's plea deal.

If the allegations are correct then anything from the FD1023 shouldn’t be linked to the Biden Family corruption scheme and the CHS should have the book thrown at him.

What's ironic is that someone like Christopher Steele and Stefan Halper, who both were CHS and lied to the FBI, were never charged.

It’s entirely possible it took so long because Hunter’s lawsuit was going to yield this information in discovery anyway and Weiss had to cover his arse. That makes sense to me.

This Russian (close friend of Putin) is also charged with obstruction.

I doubt it. Considering that Weiss got caught trying to give Hunter a blanket immunity deal that no other defendant had ever received, this seems like another way to try to protect the Bidens.

It's very fishy especially considering Smirnov was previously described by the FBI as highly credible and a useful source for several prosecutions over the past decade.

According to the New York Times:

Yet while Mr. Smirnov’s indictment provided a rare public relations boost to Hunter Biden — who is scheduled to appear before a House committee next week — Mr. Smirnov’s claims are not mentioned in the indictments of Mr. Biden.

And there is no evidence they were central to Mr. Weiss’s investigation of Mr. Biden’s foreign business dealings and finances, which drew upon financial records and grand jury interviews with a number of associates.

Why did Christopher Steele or Stefan Halper never get charged with lying to the FBI? They were both confidential human sources.

So you’re just going to pivot to “it’s a conspiracy?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No mention of the fact that several of us tried to tell you when Comer and his chuckle buddies trotted out this document that it wasn’t proven and was probably not true? And no mention that you were “all-in” on this document from the moment you saw it? No mention of how Comer and Jordan had to have known this document was lies, and sourced to Russian intelligence and they still made it public and said it was the “smoking gun” they needed?

Just more tired conspiracy crap and whataboutism. Will you ever learn?

That's hilarious. You act as is if people on a message board or partisan hacks like Goldman knew for certain that he wasn't credible.

Why was Smirnov previously described by the FBI as highly credible and a useful source for several prosecutions over the past decade?

I'll admit I'm just speculating, but considering all the shady stuff that the Biden DOJ, the FBI and Weiss has been involved in I'll believe it once it gets to trial. But I'm guessing the plan is to just stretch this out until after the election and then it will be dropped.

Once again, why weren't the FBI confidential sources Christopher Steele and Stefan Halper prosecuted for lying to the FBI? The same FBI that forged documents to get FISA warrants to spy on the Trump campaign.
