Now is not the time to talk about gun control

Director of National Intelligence and former U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard unleashed a sharp rebuke of MSNBC host and former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, accusing her of harboring a “hatred of God” in the wake of the deadly Minneapolis Catholic school shooting.

In a post that went viral, Psaki wrote that “Prayer is not freaking enough,” arguing that offering “thoughts and prayers” after such tragedies fails to provide safety or justice. “Prayers does not end school shootings. prayers do not make parents feel safe sending their kids to school. Prayer does not bring these kids back. Enough with the thoughts and prayers.”

Gabbard responded: "So why is it that people like Jen Psaki and others have such a spontaneous, visceral negative reaction to those who are praying to God for refuge, strength, and for the well-being of the victims of this heinous attack? Because they do not believe in God or His love.

"Their response is rooted in their hatred of God," Gabbard added. "They want to be God, so they view Him as their competitor. They are agents of darkness and hatred, and the light of God’s love is a threat to their dark ambitions."……..

Psaki’s statement had already drawn swift opposition from GOP figures. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday during a briefing that Psaki’s remarks were “utterly disrespectful” to Americans of faith and urged her to pray for grieving families.

“I saw the comments of my predecessor, Ms. Psaki, and frankly, I think they’re incredibly insensitive and disrespectful to the tens of millions of Americans of faith across this country who believe in the power of prayer, who believe that prayer works,” Leavitt said……..

They always find a way to make themselves the victim.

CNN) — In the wake of the Minneapolis Catholic church shooting, senior Justice Department officials are weighing proposals to limit transgender people’s right to possess firearms, according to two officials familiar with the internal discussions.

The talks, described as preliminary in nature, appear to build on an idea that has gained some currency in conservative media since the Minneapolis shooting that killed two children and injured 21, most of them children, at Annunciation Catholic Church, an attack that police say was carried out by a 23-year-old transgender woman.

Such a move would represent a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s fight against the rights of transgender Americans……..

And yet still allow access to weapons to ultra right wing hate groups... Makes so much sense - not

I don’t think the courts will ever let that go. And it’s historically stupid - you could easily prove that single white males under the age of 35 are far more likely to commit mass shootings than any other group. Are they going to take their guns away? No, they are not.

Trump removed the Biden era rule that banned people with mental illness from purchasing firearms. Now they claim that trans people are mentally ill and shouldn't own guns. Since we know that illness isn't an issue for them, my guess is that they want to get a peek at everybody's junk when they try to buy a gun. It's on brand.

    1. What would the legal basis be?

    2. If it's mental illness, could that be used to mandate mental health assessments to purchase a gun?

    3. How quickly would this SCOTUS uphold 1 while striking down 2?

So dumb, can't work out you have to do more. god is not going to do it for you. You only do thoughts and prayers because it is the easy way out.
The thoughts and prayer group tell the joke about god saying meet me half way and buy a lottery ticket, so even they know that thoughts and prayers do not solve or change anything.

I’m sure it’s more because of not wanting to lose an emerging market than any real moral stance

News of a potential plan from Donald Trump’s administration to block transgender Americans from owning firearms was met with an avalanche of opposition — including from major Second Amendment groups historically aligned with Republicans.

The National Rifle Association, among the nation’s largest and most influential lobbying groups, said “the Second Amendment isn’t up for debate.”

“The NRA supports the Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding Americans to purchase, possess and use firearms,” the group said in a statement Friday.

“NRA does not, and will not, support any policy proposals that implement sweeping gun bans that arbitrarily strip law-abiding citizens of their Second Amendment rights without due process,” the group said.…..

I seem to recall the NRA being conspicuously silent when legally licensed and carrying black men were getting shot
When young black men starting buying guns and open carrying during the 60's, the NRA gave full throat-ed support to gun control. They've become so corrupted by profiteers and foreign adversaries, that they want newborns to have the right to buy and carry guns.

I doubt this moves the needle, but just read Charlie Kirk was shot in Utah while giving a speech on a campus. Apparently right before he was shot, he was asked a question about gun control.

The Trump administration has released solicitations for a grant program meant to stop gun violence in underserved communities. But this year, the non-profits the grant was built around are disqualified from applying, according to an application notice released by the Department of Justice (DoJ) in September.

The Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI), was created in 2022, to support groups working in rural and urban communities struggling to address violence and fund research studying the programs’ efficacy.

The pioneering program was born out of a recognition by the Biden administration that such community-centered programs were among the most successful tools in combating the US’ deep-rooted gun violence problem, and had played a crucial role in helping reduce homicides in major US cities.

Before Trump’s inauguration, community-based organizations, non-profits and local and state governments were eligible to apply for the grant.

Now, only city, county and tribal governments are allowed. And the stated goal of the program has been changed from “comprehensive, community-based prevention” to “supports law enforcement efforts to reduce violent crime and improve police-community relations”.

Since 2022, the federal government has awarded more than $300m to over 120 non-profits, city and county governments and research institutions through the initiative, according to an archived listof grant recipients.

The department of justice, which oversees CVIPI, did not respond to a request for comment.

The changes at CVIPI are the latest in the Trump administration’s heel-turn from the Biden administration’s approach to gun violence prevention, which positioned Black and Latino-led groups working to address violence as legitimate solutions to crime in the nation’s hardest hit locales.

Shortly after his inauguration, Trump dismantled the White House office of gun violence prevention, and in March his administration removed the former surgeon general Vivek Murthy’s advisory on gun violence as a public health issue from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ website.

The next month, the justice department cut more than $800m in grants, including CVIPI, that were managed by the justice department’s office of justice programs (OJP), to organizations that prevent and respond to gun violence, sexual assault and hate crimes, support foster youth, and provide re-entry services.

More than $150m of that was taken from programs primarily staffed by people from the neighborhoods where shootings, homicides and other forms of crime are concentrated.……..
