There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

It’s hard to pay bills without a checking account. You’d have to pay everything in cash. Unless you don’t have bills, can one NOT have a checking account?

We finally found the guy who was paying for baseball tickets with Kavanaugh.

In theory, a reloadable card that your employer deposits your paycheck to every payday. It's how a place I worked a long time ago did direct deposits for the younger employees who didn't have bank accounts.

Interesting. I have a reloadable card, but it was issued by my bank. I didn’t know you could get them without an account.

More important votes for the House. Way to go, Johnson, you’re doing great. 🤦‍♀️🤡

Johnson is starting to make McCarthy seem like a reasonable moderate. It should be illegal to reduce salaries like that, even though the Senate would never pass it. I would sue civilly just for pain and suffering.

Even if it got past the Senate, Biden would veto it. I imagine McCarthy was going to allow these votes as well. Everybody knows they don’t mean anything, it’s just for folks to take back to their districts. Just a huge waste of time, though.

If only Mommy had dinner ready on time.
Then Daddy wouldn't have to hit her.

That's the gist of every 'blame Democrats' argument.
No, it isn't. For better or worse, the U.S. is a de facto 2 party system, and the Democrats refuse to learn to play the game. That's why Trump was elected president, that's why the SC is 6-3 and overturned abortion rights, and now why the Speaker of the House s a Bible zealot.

You want to absolve them of all wrong doing or their lack of political savvy to get results, it is your prerogative.

I hope y'all enjoy your martial law come 1/20/25

In general, I agree with you. It's this specific case where the Dems had a Catch-22. Keep the scumbag they knew for a fact was a lying sack of feces or roll the dice and see if the GOP could offer a Speaker who wasn't a complete waste of oxygen.

If you want to get into how the DNC can't sell fire to Eskimos, I'm all for it.

    No.

Trump was elected president because Republicans voted for him.

The Supreme Court is 6-3 because a Republican senate majority leader stole a seat from a Democratic president and because a Republican president appointed an extremist conservative majority who overturned abortion rights.

The Speaker of the House is a Bible zealot because a Republican majority selected him to be their leader.

Your attempt to shift the blame from the people who want these outcomes to the people who don't want these outcomes is appalling.

Not only Republicans voted for Trump.
Hillary got owned in the 1st and last debate.
Many Democrats refused to vote for Hillary, who was imposed on all by the DNC.
Many refused to vote because they felt Bernie Sanders got the shaft from the DNC.

The Supreme Court is 6-3 because a Republican senate majority leader stole a seat from a Democratic president and because a Republican president appointed an extremist conservative majority who overturned abortion rights.
And the Dems let them. Honorable mention goes to RGB for not knowing when to quit.

McCarthy could've stayed SotH if Democrats would've voted to keep him, and don't allow the Republicans to select anyone else.

Funnily enough, Democrats voted to keep George Santos in... go figure...

Your attempt to shift the blame from the people who want these outcomes to the people who don't want these outcomes is appalling.

It's not shifting the blame, I am pointing out the unwillingness and inability of the Democrats to play the political game; I am highlighting that throwing your arms up in the air and saying "oh, well, there's nothing we can do, we go high when they go low" when there's actually things that could be done, has significantly contributed to how things are today.

Remember the 4 types of sin: thought, word, deed, and omission.

    Absurd.

It's hilarious. "I'm not shifting blame" says the guy who just blamed Democrats for everything Republicans did for the last few years.

I'm 90% certain, Systemshock was also the person who couldn't/wouldn't understand you don't blame the voting bloc for the failings of the candidate.

He has a pattern of not understanding responsibility, or fault.

Which one is the absurd part?

Is not true that many non-Republicans voted for Trump?
Is it not true that many Sanders followers didn't vote for Hillary?
Is it not true that the DNC shoved Hillary down everyone's throats?
Is it not true that Hillary stunk up the 1st and most importantly the 3rd debate?
Is it not true that Democrats' votes could've kept the devil they knew in McCarthy by voting him to stay? Especially knowing the alternatives (and they had to know, right? Or are they THAT incompetent?
Is it not true that Democrats' votes kept George Santos in the House?
Are you going to sit there and tell me that, for the most part, Democrats just cry about things the Republicans do, but just throw their arms up in the air and do nothing?

Please point out, which one is the absurd part?

Non-Republican doesn’t equal Democrat, There are swing voters, or independents. Blaming democrats for Trump being elected doesn’t make much sense to me.

When Democrats had the House and the Senate - by the slimmest of margins in both cases - they managed to actually accomplish several large objectives.

The largest majority of blame for the dangers our government faces are totally on Rs, IMO.

    Your premises are (generally) factual.

But the argument is a non sequitur. Your conclusion that the current state of the Republican party is somehow the fault of the Democrats is absurd and does not follow from your premises.

The political failings of the Democratic party are not the reason the Republican party voted for Trump, that the Supreme Court is 6-3, or the reason that the Speaker of the House is a zealot.

    1) The reason the Republican party voted for Trump is because the Republican base is full of racist, xenophobic, hate-filled, uneducated quasi-authoritarians who appreciate his rhetoric and want him to do what he says to the "others".

    2) The reason the Supreme Court is 6-3 is because the leadership of the Republican party does not have the moral compass to adhere to the norms our government has held since its inception, and also because the Republican base is full of sexist, religious-fundamentalist one-issue voters.

    3) The reason the Speaker of the House is a zealot is answered by a combination of answers 1 and 2.
