He will be remembered the same way Benedict Arnold is — as a symbol of betrayal and self-interest at the expense of the nation. Hopefully, his legacy will serve as a lasting warning about the dangers of electing a shallow, anti-intellectual demagogue. Just as importantly, it should be a wake-up call about the consequences of an education system that fails to teach the fundamentals of history, civics, and democratic governance. A well-informed electorate is the cornerstone of a functioning democracy, and civic education should be mandatory — not optional — in every American school. Without it, history is doomed to repeat itself.
