This is going to need a thread as we move forward - there are now clear signs that Trump supports a new, critical if not dubious approach on vaccination, and his HHS nominee RFK Jr. regularly espouses eating raw milk and raw meat . . . dietary components most experts agree are more dangerous than their heated counterparts.

Health is certainly one of those areas were anti-institutionalism and turning to popular influencers over medical science comes with genuine risk of harm.

Today Trump provided his most clear indication that he is a vaccine skeptic - claiming (falsely of course) that the USA doesn't "do as well" as other nations that use no vaccines at all.

Multiple maternal and child health programs have been eliminated or hollowed out as part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) layoffs, prompting alarm and disbelief among advocates working to make Americans healthier.

The fear and anxiety come as a full accounting of the cuts remains elusive. Federal health officials have released only broad descriptions of changes to be made, rather than a detailed accounting of the programs and departments being eviscerated.

“Pediatricians, myself included, are losing sleep at night – worried about the health of the nation’s children,” said Dr Sue Kressly, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“The one that stands out to me is the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. There is no way to make our country healthier by eliminating expertise where it all starts, and it all starts at maternal and child health.”

The health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, announced HHS would eliminate 10,000 jobs as part of a restructuring plan. Together with cuts already made by Elon Musk’s unofficial “department of government efficiency”, HHS is likely to lose 20,000 workers – roughly one-quarter of its workforce.

“We aren’t just reducing bureaucratic sprawl,” Kennedy said. “We are realigning the organization with its core mission and our new priorities in reversing the chronic disease epidemic.”

Piecemeal and crowd-sourced information, which has filled the vacuum left by a lack of information from the health department, appears to show maternal health programs slated for elimination, many without an indication of whether they will be reassigned. The Guardian asked HHS to comment on the cuts but did not receive a response.

The picture of cuts was further muddied on Thursday when Kennedy told reporters, according to Politico: “We’re going to do 80% cuts, but 20% of those are going to have to be reinstalled, because we’ll make mistakes.”………

The cuts to maternal health programs may serve a second purpose for Republicans.

Such programs have come under fire in some conservative states, in part because the experts involved investigate deaths that could have been prevented with abortion services – now illegal or severely restricted in nearly two dozen conservative states.………..

The Trump administration is quietly carrying out a plan that aims to kill hundreds of bans on highly toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” and other dangerous compounds in consumer goods.

The bans, largely at the state level, touch most facets of daily life, prohibiting everything from bisphenol in children’s products to mercury in personal care products to PFAS in food packagingand clothing.

If successful, the public would almost certainly be exposed to much higher levels of chemicals linked to a range of serious health issues such s cancer, hormone disruption, liver disease, birth defects, and reproductive system damage, the plan’s opponents say.

The Trump Environmental Protection Agency move involves changing the way the agency carries out chemical risk evaluations, which would also pre-empt state laws that offer the one of few meaningful checks on toxic chemicals in consumer products.

The plan could also largely undo California’s effective Proposition 65 law, and could spell the end of meager federal prohibitions, including an early 2024 ban on asbestos.

“This will increase health risks to consumers by exposing them to toxic chemicals,” said an EPA employee who spoke to the Guardian on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.…….

Get your shingles vaccines folks. As long as you’re still allowed to do so.

Edit: link to the article that won’t show up

I wonder if it is correlation rather than causation, since vaccine skepticis are probably more likely to get dimentia anyway? I suspect they eschew a lot of other science guidance that would help reduce the likelihood of getting dementia.

Edit: Nevermind. The article addresses that by saying that eligibility for the vaccine had an age cutoff, and they studied people weeks apart in age on either side of the cut-off. That is fascinating, and I’m glad I got the vaccine.

Good scientific research always addresses the correlation vs causation issue.

Well, this makes total sense - NOT! I was unaware we had so much drug resistance with gonorrhea. I suspect religious intolerance at play here, since other infectious disease labs were not shut down completely like this one was. We live in stupid times.

“At a time when the world is down to a single drug that can reliably cure gonorrhea, the U.S. government has shuttered the country’s premier sexually transmitted diseases laboratory, leaving experts aghast and fearful about what lies ahead.

The STD lab at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — a leading player in global efforts to monitor for drug resistance in the bacteria that cause these diseases — was among the targets of major staff slashing at the CDC this past week. All 28 full-time employees of the lab were fired.”

This is a serious problem. It varies from hospital to hospital on which antibiotics/bacteria will be resistant. There are new antibiotics only infectious disease mds can prescribe. That protects the bacteria from adapting to the antibiotics. There is a study that predicts upwards of 39 million deaths by 2050 once the bacteria overcomes our ability to produce new ways to kill them them.

    Edit...Here it is:

the worst damm vaccine it sucks so bad the second shot was a doozy.
Luckily I didn’t have any issues with it. We know a man who reacted strongly to his first shot - very high fever, chills. Only lasted about 8-12 hours, but he couldn’t get the second shot.

This worries me. While we haven’t seen this according to the link I would be unsurprised if we don’t see it eventually.

Another child has died from measles in TX. It’s been over 10 years since we have had a death from measles in the US, it’s only April and we have had 3 so far this year.

This is completely avoidable. And RFK Jr just cancelled federal support for pop-up vaccine clinics in affected areas. May he rot in hell for what he is doing.

    I, for one, welcome our drug-resistant gonorrhea overlords . . .
reminds me of a book I was reading that had this spell. Double-burning gonorrhea. when you got it, it would set your crotch on fire and, after a while, heal it, then start all over again, smoke and all. the only way to rid yourself of it was to give it to the opposite sex or cut off your genitals.
