This is going to need a thread as we move forward - there are now clear signs that Trump supports a new, critical if not dubious approach on vaccination, and his HHS nominee RFK Jr. regularly espouses eating raw milk and raw meat . . . dietary components most experts agree are more dangerous than their heated counterparts.

Health is certainly one of those areas were anti-institutionalism and turning to popular influencers over medical science comes with genuine risk of harm.

Today Trump provided his most clear indication that he is a vaccine skeptic - claiming (falsely of course) that the USA doesn't "do as well" as other nations that use no vaccines at all.

When summers are getting hotter and hotter why the hell is this even a consideration?
    ===================

Robert F Kennedy Jr, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is facing new demands to release almost $400m allocated by Congress to help low-income US families keep the air conditioning on this summer.

The funds are under threat after the staff running a decades-old program were fired – as part of the Trump administration’s so-called “efficiency” drive.

States and tribal nations are still waiting for funding allocated by Congress for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (Liheap) – a chronically underfunded bipartisan program that helped about 6m households keep on top of energy bills last year.

The money is stuck in limbo after the Trump administration this month eliminated the division of energy assistance (DEA) – the office within HHS that oversees the four-decade-old program – and fired the entire staff.

Pressure is growing on Kennedy to reinstate the staff and guarantee that the energy aid be distributed to the states – in compliance with the administration’s constitutional obligation to abide by congressional appropriations.

On Tuesday morning, the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (Neada), the organization for state directors of Liheap, will send a letter to Kennedy requesting the fired staff be rehired and the funds be released by 1 May – which would give states just 153 days to deploy the money before the end of the fiscal year.…..

Donald Trump’s slashing of foreign aid has derailed the projected end of the Aids pandemic and could lead to four million extra deaths by 2030, The Independent can reveal.

New figures show the number of Aids-related deaths could jump from six million to 10 million in the next five years unless funding is reinstated, according to forecasts from the UN Aids agency (UNAIDS).

The unprecedented disruption to global HIV programmes by the US is also projected to lead to more than three million more Aids orphans than previously expected by the end of the decade.

Only last year, the UN said a goal to end the Aids pandemic by the end of the decade was in reach, equating to a 90 per cent reduction in new infections and deaths.

According to the UN figures, there will be 3.4 million more orphans, defined as children who have lost at least one parent to Aids.

In addition, 600,000 more newborns could be infected with HIV by 2030 – more than double the number originally feared.

That will bring the total number of infant infections to a million by the end of the decade, analysis of the figures by The Independent shows.……

    These are his buddies:

“Anti-vaccine activists with close ties to US health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are falsely claiming that the measles public health crisis in Texas is caused by a “bioweapon” targeting the Mennonite community. These activists are now trying to sell their followers a range of pseudoscientific cures”

This administration is unreal….2 months into this nightmare and look at the garbage they are posting on a gov website:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Texas doctor who has been treating children in a measles outbreak was shown on video with a measles rash on his face in a clinic a week before Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met him and praised him as an “extraordinary” healer.

Dr. Ben Edwards appeared in the video posted March 31 by the anti-vaccine group Kennedy once led, Children’s Health Defense. In it, Edwards appears wearing scrubs and talking with parents and children in a makeshift clinic he set up in Seminole, Texas, ground zero of the outbreak that has sickened hundreds of people and killed three, including two children.

Edwards is asked whether he had measles, and he responded, “Yes,” then said his infection started the day before the video was recorded.

“Yesterday was pretty achy. Little mild fever. Spots came in the afternoon. Today, I woke up feeling good,” Edwards said in the video.

Measles is most contagious for about four days before and four days after the rash appears and is one of the world’s most contagious diseases, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Doctors and public health experts said Edwards’ decision to go into the clinic put children, their parents and their community at risk because he could have spread it to others. They said there was no scenario in which Edwards’ conduct would be reasonable…….

This is so completely wrong. Honestly, he should have his license suspended until he takes a refresher course on communicable disease and passes it. He claimed every patient he saw already had measles. Well, I’m betting the staff didn’t all have measles. I’m betting the custodians didn’t all have measles, the person who delivered the mail didn’t have measles. I’m guessing he had to interact with a bunch of people who didn’t have measles during the day.

This is the absolutely most communicable disease we have. It’s the height of irresponsible behavior and he wasn’t needed there. They don’t have a staff shortage.
