I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

Doge still has to go away. They're the bigger problem than Musk.

    Agree

But I don't think anyone is going to forget Musk's role in this - He literally destroyed his brand and I don't think he will ever recover from this. He and his companies will be toxic forever going forward

No doubt. I mean, he was already tanking his rep with the Cybertruck and then buying Twitter. And he was already a known ketamine user if not addict, and all around dbag. This whole thing with DOGE just cemented his legacy as a narcissistic, self-centered, drug addicted sad excuse of a human being.

    Toxic indeed.

In what is called “pass backs,” President Trump shared his proposed budget with NASA before making a formal request to Congress. This is the early stage of the annual budget process where the President proposes their budget before Congress does the real work of crafting and passing the actual budget.

It was reported earlier this month that NASA, alongside other government agencies, would be receiving a budget cut to hopefully reduce the overall US budget. Trump’s early proposal would make that a roughly 20% cut, $25 billion down to about $20 billion, with the majority of that coming out of its Science programs.

Overall, the Science Mission Directorate would see a 50% cut in its budget, essentially shutting down the bulk of its ability to build new missions.

It has a female name. Need to change the name.
You are spot on as to one reason. Other reasons include that Trump doesn’t like it because he had nothing to do with it and it is the product of intellectuals/experts. Musk’s reasons include it in some way infringes on his efforts to control space exploration and his actual intellectual shallowness is threatened.

So many workers at the Department of Transportation accepted a second deferred resignation offer that officials have been forced to ask some of them to reconsider.

As part of President Donald Trump and the Elon Musk-led DOGE’s efforts to slash the federal workforce, the Transportation Department offered employees another opportunity to take a deferred resignation, for which approximately 4,700 people volunteered, according to Politico.

That number, while not final, represents roughly 9 percent of the department’s 55,000-strong workforce. About 45,000 of those work at the Federal Aviation Administration, although it is unclear how many offered to quit that particularly agency.

The high number of employees volunteering to leave in exchange for pay and benefits through September has led some officials to prompt them to “reconsider” the offer, Politicoreported.…….

This exact thing is happening at DOD. A ton of people are taking the DRP for the second round because they're seeing the writing on the wall that the Republicans are intent on destroying the federal government and the local economy. People are leaving DC in large numbers now and they don't want to be the ones left holding the bag. This is pure fear on the part of employees and now the heads of agencies are freaking out because they're losing good employees and it's going to cost more to keep the doors open now because they have to find other means to get work done, which means canceling contracts and making new ones among other things.

This has never been about efficiency. This has always been about tearing it down and remaking it in the image the President wants.

President Donald Trump has said “we want more babies,” and the White House has reportedly examined ways to persuade Americans to have more children.

But the actions of the Elon Musk-led U.S. DOGE Service have left many pregnant federal workers without the parental leave, health insurance and income they had thought they could rely on when they chose to conceive.

Pregnant employees of the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has many overseas workers and has been gutted by DOGE-driven cuts, are in particularly dire straits.

Many of the agency’s workers are losing their housing along with some or all of their parental leave as they’re forced to move back to the United States from abroad ahead of their due dates.

Dozens of expectant parents employed by USAID have begged the State Department to postpone their dismissals, which are set for July 1 or Sept. 2, or honor previously guaranteed parental leave.

So far, they have received little help – and say that laying them off within days or weeks of their due dates flies in the face of the Trump administration’s commitment to a pro-family agenda.

“I am almost wishing I deliver prematurely so that at least I would still have coverage after I deliver,” said one woman whose family lives overseas and whose baby is set to arrive within days of her husband’s layoff date. “Then at least it comes out. It can get the help it needs before my health insurance cuts off.”

The Washington Post interviewed 13 expecting or postpartum parents who say the Trump administration’s cuts have forced them to make overseas moves, ripped away their housing or eliminated their parental leave.

The mass layoffs also strip pregnant and postpartum workers of their health insurance and income, leaving many uncertain about where they will live and how they will pay for postpartum medical care……..

Can you all take a second and sign this petition?
    ===============================

With another executive order added to the list by the Trump administration, this time libraries and museums could be on the chopping block. Libraries and museums receive necessary funding every year to provide Americans with internet and computer access, telehealth and work spaces, small business support, and a variety of other programs and services.

Add your name to the petition to tell the Trump administration and Republicans that funding to libraries and museums must remain in place in order for them to continue to provide these services to Americans.

    Why is this important?

An executive order issued by the Trump administration on Friday night, March 14, calls for the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the nation’s only federal agency for America’s libraries. The following statement was made by the American Library Association:

Americans have loved and relied on public, school and academic libraries for generations. By eliminating the only federal agency dedicated to funding library services, the Trump administration’s executive order is cutting off at the knees the most beloved and trusted of American institutions and the staff and services they offer:

    • Early literacy development and grade-level reading programs
    • Summer reading programs for kids
    • High-speed internet access
    • Employment assistance for job seekers
    • Braille and talking books for people with visual impairments
    • Homework and research resources for students and faculty
    • Veterans’ telehealth spaces equipped with technology and staff support
    • STEM programs, simulation equipment and training for workforce development
    • Small business support for budding entrepreneurs
To dismiss some 75 committed workers and mission of an agency that advances opportunity and learning is to dismiss the aspirations and everyday needs of millions of Americans. And those who will feel that loss most keenly live in rural communities.

As seedbeds of literacy and innovation, our nation’s 125,000 public, school, academic and special libraries deserve more, not less support. Libraries translate 0.003% of the federal budget into programs and services used by more than 1.2 billion people every year.......
