I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

It seems pretty clear that it violates federal rules. We shall see if the courts are capable of upholding said rules.

Some are and some aren’t. Look for the Orange One to make an attempt to run to Cannon.

There's also a lawsuit incoming reportedly:

    I agree with this description:

Sam Hammond, senior economist at the Foundation for American Innovation, told the Washington Post that Doge’s efforts would focus on the implementation of ideas within the executive branch and that the White House that would exempt it from reporting requirements.

“Doge isn’t a federal advisory committee because Doge doesn’t really exist,” Hammond told the outlet. “Doge is a branding exercise"

They are nothing more than a "think tank" that is pretending to be a government agency. It is an excellent tool for Musk to influence a weak trump though.

But FACA doesn’t have to be some agency - it’s actually meant to cover precisely how they are describing what DOGE is. A think tank that gives recommendations directly to the administration is a FAC.

If DOGE is going to have members and meetings and the product of those meetings is reports or advice to the administration, it’s FACA.

Ramaswamy has official departed the not-a-department.

Musk meanwhile is reportedly taking up offices in the White House: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/20/us/politics/elon-musk-office-west-wing.html

Here’s the DOGE executive order - it’s basically IT realignment 🤷‍♂️

Umm. Yeah. A 'Software Modernization Initiative to improve the quality and efficiency of government-wide software, network infrastructure, and information technology (IT) systems' is hardly going to deliver a couple of trillion dollars of savings.

Enormous waste of time and money.

Not because updating technology isn’t necessary but because this adds a level of bureaucracy which will cause more inefficiency in updating said technology. Musk doesn’t have the ability to implement this efficiently or effectively. If this is the alleged limit of the DOGE then it will likely fade away while Musk keeps hanging around until Trump gets annoyed with him getting too much face time in the media or until Musk gets bored.

Given Trump and Musk’s history, along with the Project 2025 goal of creating an administration entirely loyal to Trump and his inner circle, it’s not far-fetched to suspect that the so-called “updating of government software technology” could include hidden surveillance tools. These could potentially be borrowed from X to monitor and identify employees who aren’t 100% loyal.

Musk, in this scenario, might end up resembling a U.S. version of Himmler.

Yeah, I can see that happening. The question is what will be the number and “quality” of those put in charge of various actions via executive order. I think there will be an extremely wide variance in implementation of these orders. Basically, a mess will be the result. And of course there will be profit by some and damage to many.
