Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

None of what you assumed in the above post is accurate. He has the right to do it, but it shows the campaign against Musk after he bought Twitter was leftwing astroturfing rather than a grassroots movement.

You guys acted like Twiiter would fail, crash, turn into a Nazi/racist forum. Not much changed except for reinstating some banned accounts.
i mean, its no secret that Nazi level activiy has skyrocketed on Twitter. you may want to ignore it..

Those people sound exactly like the ones on Facebook who were posted all the time on Facebook how they were gonna delete Facebook, but never do. I never really used Twitter, but once he went on his crazy tour on Twitter, i have since deactivated my account.
At least Zuck doesn't get on Facebook and personally attack people he disagrees with... could you imagine..
I think that people are more alike than they care to admit.

It has definitely changed, I see a lot more hateful posts than I ever did before. I see people telling complete lies about vaccines, Covid, with no moderation at all. Lies about Ukraine, lies about nearly every right wing talking point.

Oh woe is me. What is it with you and others here that act like the country can't survive if people are exposed to lies. Why is the left so scared of hearing things they don't like, they don't believe or that they think are hateful? And you guys accuse others of supporting authoritarianism.

I mean, during the pandemic people died because they were exposed to lies about the vaccine. So some people literally don't survive when they're exposed to lies. But what does that matter ...

I have a better question for you, why do Republicans and the right lie so much? Why do they push so many conspiracy theories? Why do the spread hate so much?

Yeah, why is it only the right that lies….lol…so much?

C’mon man. Left, right, or center, if they are a politician, and their lips are moving, there is greater than a 51% chance that they are lying.

I don't really believe that. That's a tired "both sides" false equivalency that only servers the liars.

There are definitely committed liars, distorters and conspiracy pushers on the right. I can name 20 right off the bat without blinking an eye. Who on the left today fits that description?

Lol, this must be the first time in US history when someone said, “you know what? I trust my politician.”

Except that's not what I said. Especially my politicians who are mostly right wingers.

But you believing they're all lying makes it much easier for you to discard anything they say that you don't like or doesn't fit your belief system. And that's what I see most often with people who believe and constantly claim that all politicians lie all or most of the time.

Ask Ron DeathSantis, Kristi Noem, Kari Lake, Donald Trump. No bigger whining snowflakes than republicans.

I don’t know anyone that trusts politicians. People that believe politicians don’t lie also tend to believe that the stripper loves them.

That's just ridiculous, but again I never mentioned trust. That's all you. I guess you feel compelled to put those words in my mouth to construct a strawman to make your point.

If I can verify that what a politician says is truthful based on independent sources, I believe it. If I pay enough attention to a politicians and I've consistently verified that what they generally say is truthful, then I'll generally believe them. If I know something to be the truthful and a politician says it as well, then that will add to their credibility. But I'm always open to changing my opinion of a politicians credibility if I learn something new about them.

When the politician does the opposite of that consistently, then they're liars and I judge them as such. There are many of those politicians in the right.

What I don't do is assume is some worthless trope that all politicians lie all or most of the time. But you do you. You're not alone, most people believe the same thing you do.

My pardon, I think that we are on the same page here. We both agree that politicians lie, and that they can’t be trusted.
