Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

    Why? He's not Republican.

Also, Tesla isn't that different in %.
Because currently liberals crave censorship while the supposed people who are trying to stop "disinformation" are some of the biggest purveyors of actual disinformation. Take a look at the people who were speaking at the recent disinformation conference. Plenty of CIA linked speakers.

This is actually quite something. Yes, liberals are currently banning books from school libraries, passing laws to govern what teachers can and cannot say in the classroom, and punishing corporations whose training programs they don’t like. Yes, you’re right - lol - liberals are proposing that once they take power all the government employees who have a different ideology from them should be fired from their posts - not appointees, mind you, but regular government employees.

My god, how does this much cognitive dissonance exist in one person?

Funny how irony works, isn't it. It's almost like right wingers who are clamoring for FREE SPEACH aren't actively trying to use real government censorship in everything from what kids can read in schools to what teachers can discuss in class to restricting what a company can say about legislation that effects their employees without facing right wing government retribution.

Why are you changing the subject? We are clearly talking about the censorship of misinformation online. Hasn't what you are talking about been discussed in another thread?

You made a blanket statement - it’s fair game when you are making such statements.

So is allowing a disinformation super highway.... the gullible are the problem.

We should all be aiming for the truth, with multiple points of views. But too many disingenuous manipulative people are out there that confuse people and make them think that certain things are true.

I think the Russian national security expert said it best (think his name was Clint Watts). Don't censor info, but have a ratings system. Like a consumer reports of information. Otherwise, it will turn into a silly censorship issue and make the lie get further cemented.
Who gets to 'rate' the information?
That is the main problem and the complaint.

I am never a fan of curtailing the flow of information because there are stupid people in the world.

Do you think there should be an age limit on the consumption for porn?

On the sale of porn, I think age limits are legitimate and good. I think it's folly to think we can totally stop teenagers from consuming porn. I was "consuming" porn before I was 13, before the internet. And it wasn't because of parents or family environment.

You beat me to it: the real problem is not anything Musk will do with Twitter it's that there are far too many stupid people in the U.S.

What I am alleging about money ruining people is that the money causes the break in their brains. And it’s not like a mental breakdown, it doesn’t incapacitate them, it just robs them of all human perspective. More like a pathology that still allows them to function. The more money/fame, the harder to escape the malignant effects on the human psyche. It’s not like this is solely my theory. It’s fairly observable.

I keep thinking what I might do with 43 BILLION dollars. I took out my calculator. I could give 430,000 impoverished people $100,000. And I would, without hesitation. I think helping to get 430,000 people out poverty would have better, more positive long term effects vs buying something like twitter.

I personally think a lot of the issue is going to be Twitter's algo. We know it's a problem at Facebook. The biggest issue with you're proposed solution is based on the algo who even sees a different opinion? I'm not discounting there is an issue with these online platforms. I find wholly censoring certain opinions, or topics is so problematic. Twitter has already gotten it wrong multiple times. It's an impossible job.

My overall opinion is that "liberals" should really keep their eye on the ball. The root issue is echo chambers that cause these topics, and opinions to never be challenged. Censorship is a cure that maybe worse then the disease.

Musk is going to program Republicans to vote for the green new deal.

This really is a case study in the perils of groupthink.

So according to the purchase agreement Musk isn’t allowed to publicly criticize Twitter or its representatives until the sake is final. He has already broken that part of the agreement. He has publicly criticized an individual for her actions while running Twitter and now she is being harassed on Twitter by his minions. Name calling and racist comments. She is a brown woman. Color me shocked that’s his first target.

He also has amplified a tweet from Cernovich, who also called out an individual woman by name. Cernovich is notorious for promoting Pizzagate, is associated with Alex Jones and is a virulent misogynist.

So, we’re off to a great start.

Why does everything always have to sound so fascist with this guy?

If I had to guess, that first line is dig at the left and maybe the squad with their call for a ministry of truth and reconciliation after Biden won.
The rest are good things to do.

That’s wild (the terms, not that he went after a brown woman), do you have the Tweet?
