Several prominent Democratic figures are set to speak at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this month, two sources familiar with the plans told NBC News.

President Joe Biden, former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been confirmed as speakers at the convention. Obama and the Clintons delivered speeches during the 2020 DNC, which was largely held virtually to prevent the spread of Covid-19 amid the pandemic.

A source familiar said that former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson Jason Carter is also confirmed to be speaking as a representative for his grandfather…….

I thought it was a good, but not a great speech.
Color me surprised that that's your opinion.

It had a lot of substance, and hit all the right points, but she isn’t as dynamic of a speaker as the Obamas..
It's completely subjective and in the ear of the beholder, because I personally like Harris as speaker more than both of the Obama's.

It had a lot of substance, and hit all the right points, but she isn’t as dynamic of a speaker as the Obamas, which is the standard of a great speech. It didn’t have the catchy phrases that would go viral. However, it was far better than Trump’s, and I think it was the best speech I’ve ever heard from her. I think she improved her chances, because she moderated, and she came off as presidential.
Your first problem is expecting her to be like the Obamas. That was never going to happen.

We had a whole week of catchy phrases, including from Walz. It wasn't needed from her.

Yeah, Michelle Obama set that bar so impossibly high a couple of nights ago, she was just operating at an entirely different level, it was amazing.. Kamala's speech wasn't transcendent in the same way but Democrats seem to have really liked it and so she at least did what she had to there.

It wasn’t just Democrats who liked it. I saw where CNN had a group of 10 undecided voters watch it - then interviewed them. 8 decided to vote for Harris after that speech. 1 for Trump, 1 said they probably won’t vote.

Also, someone made this point that I totally agree with. She didn’t even mention “breaking the glass ceiling” or the historic nature of her candidacy in any way. She just laid out a very strong case for her readiness and qualifications to be president. That was very smart. She was presidential.

Gotcha.. was just basing that off of the responses on here juxtaposed to how my wife and I felt about it.

I will say though, the open embrace of patriotism and the flag and all of that the Democrats had here.. brilliant and long overdue to flip that shirt on its head.
And future President Harris even closed her speech with a full-throated emphasis on what it means to be American. If this isn't patriotic, I don't know what is.

    Full transcript of Hartis speech.

So, fellow Americans. Fellow Americans. I — I love our country with all my heart. Everywhere I go — everywhere I go, in everyone I meet, I see a nation that is ready to move forward. Ready for the next step in the incredible journey that is America.
I see an America where we hold fast to the fearless belief that built our nation and inspired the world. That here, in this country, anything is possible. That nothing is out of reach. An America where we care for one another, look out for one another and recognize that we have so much more in common than what separates us. That none of us — none of us has to fail for all of us to succeed.

And that in unity, there is strength. You know, our opponents in this race are out there every day denigrating America, talking about how terrible everything is. Well, my mother had another lesson she used to teach: Never let anyone tell you who you are. You show them who you are.

America, let us show each other and the world who we are and what we stand for: Freedom, opportunity, compassion, dignity, fairness and endless possibilities.

We are the heirs to the greatest democracy in the history of the world. And on behalf of our children and our grandchildren and all those who sacrificed so dearly for our freedom and liberty, we must be worthy of this moment.
It is now our turn to do what generations before us have done, guided by optimism and faith, to fight for this country we love, to fight for the ideals we cherish and to uphold the awesome responsibility that comes with the greatest privilege on Earth: the privilege and pride of being an American. So let’s get out there, let’s fight for it. Let’s get out there, let’s vote for it, and together, let us write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told.

Thank you. God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America. Thank you.

Kudos to the speechwriter(s). That was superb. While I wouldn't call it an all-time great speech, it definitely was superb and miles better than any Trump speech ever. Just another passage from her speech last night that I really loved. And it's a refrain I've stated many times on this board. Country over party. Bolding is mine.

And with this election, and — and with this election, our nation — our nation, with this election, has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles of the past, a chance to chart a new way forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.

And let me say, I know there are people of various political views watching tonight. And I want you to know, I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America’s fundamental principles, from the rule of law, to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power.

I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations. A president who leads and listens; who is realistic, practical and has common sense; and always fights for the American people. From the courthouse to the White House, that has been my life’s work.

Additionally, she gave at least 10x the speech Biden would have delivered.

Yes. And it was a speech that at no time in his life, Trump has ever had the character or ability to give.

I say this as somebody who had concerns about making a candidate change, she was phenomenal to an extent I didn’t anticipate. She laid out the case against Trump with the skill of a prosecutor. She made her appeal to every American who is tired of the hateful, divisive, and dangerous MAGA movement. She articulated a vision for the future of our nation, and for the working class, that included key policy targets. She projected an authenticity that is often missing from politics. Her delivery was nearly flawless.

    She was presidential.

Inclusivity and optimism versus hate and despair.. America is stuck somewhere between the two of those but I think positivity wins out over negativity.

Every day, normal Americans are looking ahead.

You CANNOT live life in fear/despair. Its paralyzing. And our brains arent wired to do so.

Just as Trump tapped into the angst of so many in 2016, that shtick is now old and busted. Folks are realizing that they really have so much more to live and work for than to be subjected to the "fear mongering" and scare tactics used over the last 8 years.

Its happening. You are seeing the first signs of it here. It will keep going.

Wait til the FED starts to lower rates ( first one will be Sept ) and this whole " economy is in disrepair" line from Trump will slowly start to fall away. Leaving him virtually no angle of attack and losing more ground with middle class voters.

Well, if we're going to judge a speech, you do it against the best. I don't say a player is great, just because they performed their best. I also thought that Walz's speech was also better, but I know that is my subjective opinion, somewhat colored by the reaction of his son. Don't get me wrong, I loved Harris' speech, but to me it was good, not great. I know many people in here jumped to the conclusion that it was great, but I know more sober assessment are emerging. I just read 10 opinions writers at the NYT, and they rated the speech from 6 to 9. Most gave the speech an 8, which I think is fair. She delivered the speech and message that she needed to. If she convinced 8 out of 10 undecided voters to vote for her, then that is outstanding. To the extent that it exceeded my expectations, it was great. She kept the momentum going, and I expect to see a 2% bump in the polling.

Trump can’t win in a battle of ideas so things are about to get even uglier on all fronts. The personal consequences are too great for him if he loses; his desperation will place greater demands on all of his worst instincts. Disinformation and bigoted attacks will only intensify. I hope America is prepared. I hope the Biden administration will do everything it possibly can to protect fair and secure voting and the safety of voters.

All she needs to be is competent, and likable.

That speech was more then adequate. All she needs to do now is have a decent debate vs Trump. If she has a great debate? She probably wins NC/NV/AZ, and wins in a 320+ landslide.
