BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Saturday’s mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket as a hate crime and an act of racially motivated violent extremism.

The gunman was identified during his arraignment as Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, New York. That name that matches the name given in a 180-page manifesto that surfaced online shortly after the attack and took credit for the violence in the name of white supremacy.

If you take away the ARs, there are still plenty of rifles that can do the exact same thing that ARs can. I'd venture to say, if ARs are completely off the market, there will be a run on AK types (because of price) and 3D printers.

Yeah, I knew I shouldn't have bothered to bring up the idea of controlling sales of the AR15 or any of these military weapons that have no place in the general population.

Let me just say this. The Buffalo shooter threatened to shoot up his own school, from what I heard, and still was able at only 18 to go out and buy an AR. Lots of luck with any other approach except taking these weapons off the market.

As details of the Buffalo mass shooting emerged over the weekend, much of the media focussed on the shooter’s self-stated motivation: his racist belief that white Americans are being deliberately replaced through immigration in a “great replacement” theory.

Over at Fox News, however, there was barely any mention of the white gunman’s alleged reasoning for opening fire at a supermarket, killing 10 people and wounding three more, in a predominantly Black area.

The absence of coverage of the motive was revealing, given Fox News’s most popular host, Tucker Carlson, has pushed the concept of replacement theory in more than 400 of his shows – and has arguably done more than anyone in the US to popularize the racist conspiracy.

Fox News, according to Oliver Darcy, a media correspondent for CNN, “largely ignored” the fact that the shooter had been inspired by replacement theory. Darcy searched transcripts from Fox News’s shows, and found one brief mention, by Fox News anchor Eric Shawn.

As Americans absorbed news of the shooting and struggled to understand why it had happened, it seemed a glaring thing for the network to disregard. But given Carlson and his colleagues’ promotion of the theory, which has been unchecked by Fox News’s top executives, experts see the network as being left in a bind.

“What can they say?” said Matt Gertz, senior fellow at Media Matters for America, a watchdog of rightwing media. “There’s no way for anyone at Fox News to really issue a convincing and compelling, forthright denunciation of great replacement theory, because it’s being discussed on the network’s primetime hour on a near constant basis.”……

And as Carlson is doing, I'm sure they're all calling the racist "great replacement" theory, "political views".

What’s their phrase: “normal political discourse”? Yes, talk about a huge conspiracy by the “elites” to “replace” the current electorate with “third world” “more compliant” immigrants, there’s nothing normal about that. That’s hideous, racist and has more dog whistles than Pet Smart.

I read an interesting demographic comment that said it’s all about nothing anyway. The cake is baked, it’s impossible numerically for white people to remain the majority in this country at this point.

What I don’t get is that all these other nationalities have been coming here for hundreds of years, at every turn white people panicked about the “dirty immigrant hordes”, whether they were Irish, German, Italian, Chinese or whatever. And after a generation or two all of these people became American. They assimilated, belonged. Some of their descendants are now panicking about the “third world” immigrant hordes. It’s all so pointless and stupid.

Checking out Foxnews.com (did it so you don't have to) today, there's one article on the website about the Buffalo mass shooting. Doesn't mention the motivation of the white replacement theory and barely mentions the mass shooting being motivated by race at all. And the comments to the article are predictably about how gun control wouldn't work, same old arguments. But they seem to be forming a new theory on what the real cause was and what motivated this racist (with 93 likes):

The serious issue here is what broke this man? I firmly believe it is the effects of the Indoctrination that has been going on in classrooms. It isn't Guns that are the problem, it is this Liberal Think. It is the breaking of young minds. This phenomenon has only been occurring over the last 30 years with increased frequency. Guns have been around for centuries, but Liberal Think and Classroom Indoctrination has only been plaguing young minds about 30 years now. I learned Gun Safety in the classroom, during school hours, on school property by a licensed Gun Safety Instructor that was also a teacher. It was 1974. We went behind the school and fired live rounds to understand Gun Safety and respect for guns. But this generation is being taught Gender Fluidity, Personal Pronouns, things that break logical thinking. You take a child that knows Mom and Dad as female and male and then break that fundamental learning. And once a mind is broken, it lashes out to protect itself. In the form of Hate Violence and lack of respect for life. This is what the Social Experiment is doing to this generation.

So, even though this guy was completely motivated by racist right wing media on Fox News and other conservative outlets, it's totally liberals fault. They will never have the self reflection and honesty to admit how much damage they're doing to America.

I'll give them one thing, they are consistent....blame others for what you're doing - straight out of the MAGA playbook.....

Guess we'll hear from @Farb soon now that the marching orders have gone out.

Read an article saying that one of the first big proponents of replacement theory was a Democratic senator/governor? in the 1940s and some have already taken that factoid and run with it

"Did you know that the Great Replacement Theory is actually a Democratic theory?"

Right up there with "Did you know that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican?"

If us liberals cared enough, we'd take that factoid and turn it on Tucker Carlson and ask, "Why does Tucker Carlson keep promoting the Great Replacement theory? Is he a liberal democrat in sheep's clothing? I'm just asking."

According to Laura Ingraham, the real people to blame would be...

"The media that are propping up an administration that has brought this country to its knees with policies making American families poorer every single day. And they’ve tried this tack so many times.”

    =============
From the granddaughter of one of the victims
    ==============================

My 86 year old grandmother, Ruth Whitfield, was murdered on Saturday by a hate-filled, perverted White supremacist GROWN MAN.

If it had been ANY other cause I could process it differently. I could rationalize it somehow. But this is too close to home for me. How do you dedicate your life to fighting bigotry, trying to educate White people on their role in ending this blight on humanity all for it to take your own grandmother??!!

I feel like such a forking failure!!!! I feel like everything I’ve ever done in my career was completely pointless! I know that it should make me want to double down and be proof of why it’s such important work but I promise you I feel the opposite. I feel like a fraud. Like I’ve been spoon-feeding White people these conversations about race so as not to upset them. Feeding into the White fragility over and over again.

Asking them about their racist relatives and having them tell me that its not a reflection of them. BUT IT IS!!!!!!!!!! You have chosen the side of hate every second that you remain silent. Telling us that White children can’t handle conversations about race but my grandmothers great grandchildren must look at her dead body!

And I will have to tell my children her story because she won’t be there to meet them. The last time I saw her we were sitting in her living room and she was telling stories about her childhood in the rural South. Stories about the racism she has endured since birth and I cannot believe it is the reason her life is over.

She had at least 20 more years left to live- she didn’t use a walker, or a hearing aid, even have significant sight issues. I always struggled to even see her as elderly.

If you care at all about honoring my grandmother and the other victims, I ask the following:

    1. STOP FORKING TALKING ABOUT THE PERPETRATOR!!!!!!!!! He is nameless and faceless and he is nothing and will die nothing so long as you all let him.

    2. Instead talk about White supremacy as the absolute fabric of our nation and what YOU plan to do about it.

    3. Support local organizations in Buffalo gathering food for residents. This forker targeted a Black community that was turned into a Black community by White supremacy but it is also a food desert. They can’t simply go to another grocery store in the meantime.

    4. Pray for my family, specifically my grandfather who lost his wife of nearly 70 years. She was murdered coming from her daily visit to him.

    5. Pray for my soul. This is the type of the moment where you find yourself at a moral crossroad. You can chose to turn pain into purpose and vibrate higher in love or you can turn a corner and meet these people in depths of hell and go tit for tat. I am paralyzed at that crossroad right now and the only thing holding me up is a phrase my grandmother wrote to me in a letter “we fall down, but we get up”.

I pray that I can get up again one day but that day is not today….I love you forever grandma I am SO SORRY that I couldn’t protect you..

Yeah, he went to a community with limited benefits and killed 10 of them to protect the poor.

I don't disagree I'll just add to that that Limbaugh presented himself as a Christian and certainly most of the people that listened to him considered themselves to be Christians and so.. I just think it kind of all goes hand in hand honestly.
If he was a Christan, he was a terrible example of one. Unfortunately, too many use Christianity for their own political ends and behind closed doors are actually completely unserious about religion. Forking hypocrites.

    Indeed.
