This will be controversial. It appears tailored to appeal to independent and Republican voters who don't approve of what the MAGA movement has become - an attempt to try to further isolate the Trump wing.

Will it work? Or will it have the opposite effect sort of like what we saw with the "deplorables" remark from Hillary?

One thing working for Biden's timing is that some Trump support in the media has clearly been pealing away, he's at a weak point - and could get weaker as the criminal case against him builds. But Biden is definitely throwing down the gauntlet.

I just read a quote from JD Vance saying that if Trump is re-elected he should fire everyone in government and replace them with people loyal to him. He even said he should do what Orban has done. According to what i read this was said on a podcast about a year ago.

For anyone reading this who doesn’t know: Orban is anti-democracy. He has crippled Hungary’s free press, converted tax dollars into private wealth for himself and his cronies, rewritten the country’s constitution for his benefit, created a secret police force with nearly unlimited powers, etc. He admires countries like China, India, Russia, Singapore and Turkey.

This is the new Republican playbook. This is who they want to follow.

ABC, NBC, and CBS will air Charles III's speech. They did not air Biden's warning that democracy is under attack. Cowardice.

In recent high-profile speeches, Joe Biden has been performing a high-wire rhetorical act. He is not shying away from the f-word (fascism) – the ultimate condemnation in humanity’s political vocabulary – even if he qualifies that condemnation by calling some on the American right “semi-fascists”.

At the same time, he is putting a lot of effort into separating “extremist Maga Republicans” from the decent folks on the right, be it your nextdoor conservative neighbor or Biden’s old chums across the aisle in the US Senate.

No matter the level of polarization, the president appears to suggest, you can have a barbecue with the former, and with some senators you might still be able to have a beer and discover a shared humanity (unless it’s Mitch McConnell).

On the face of it, this seemingly contradictory rhetoric makes sense as a political tactic; less obviously, it’s also the right thing to do in a democracy where you ought to be careful about throwing blanket accusations at large parts of the citizenry.

But, absent a plan for how to address Trump’s “base” and bring it back into the democratic fold or, failing that, render it politically powerless, this approach is likely to contribute little to securing the American experiment in self-government…….

I call utter and total BS on this article….It’s about time he did it and I’m glad he did….those kooks are a threat to our democracy and need to be called out….It’s like ignore or don’t prosecute because….consequences….BS….it absolutely needs to be done….
