I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

So in the middle of the tweet thread he says that the mortality rate for the new cases in China seems to be 0.7% rather than the 2% we have seen before. I think this means that physicians are figuring out how to treat it. Also, that it seems to be containable, with some targeted isolations, we won’t have to resort to the draconian methods of China, IMO, with better education and early testing.

There’s zero doubt there will be lots of new cases coming, but if they can treat it more effectively, and get testing earlier to figure out where they need to contain it, it’s looking better.

Cautious optimism.

Assuming the mortality rate continues to drop as we learn more, the risk could ultimately be somewhat similar to a typical bad flu pandemic as opposed to a repeat of the Spanish flu in 1918 where numbers stayed around 2%. Still not good, but more optimistic than the numbers out of China would have suggested.

Thanks for that article.

Even with the cautious optimism, we still have our little cache of canned foods and so forth, so that if need be we can stay home for a couple of weeks without worrying about what we have to eat. As long as the Internet holds out we‘ll be ok.

ETA: I don’t want to seem to be making light of it. There will still be potentially thousands of deaths. Just hopefully not a million or more.

I didn't say I agreed with China's method, I said they were drastic. Dragging people out of their houses away from loved ones will not go down the same way in our country.

Yeah the only thing the we as a people are gonna have to take care or each other. For one we will have to be honest enough to take ourselves out of the population if we feel sick. If your job is dealing with the public stay home

Joe this is already a failure for the administration. Here’s a really good thread on how we got in this position where we have community spread that went undetected. And no, it doesn’t vilify people who allowed this to happen, but it points out the key differences between the response now and the Ebola response. It’s a long thread but worth the read.

It would be even sadder if the Democrats screw this up and we loose both ways.

Whom ever is in office during a world wide health crisis is gonna have some problems keeping the wheels turning.

Now that Trump's whole worth has been what he has done for the business community and our stock market with it dropping like a rock is not a good look on him. Especially considering how he did it by ramping up or national debt.

With his assignment of a human that does not believe in science in charge of the whole thing speak to how he thinks this is not serious.

This is a serious problem.

Exercise, eat well, and pray if you are of a certain age is all I can tell ya.

I doubt that there's a large contingent of people hoping this is terrible, but of course it exists.
