I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Trump’s irresponsible statements about the unproven drugs caused panic buying. What panic have Democratic leaders created?
I truly don’t think you’re implying that only the Republicans induce and incite panic, are you?

In other news, if our deaths/million were to match Italy's (which is a distinct possibility in the next two-ish weeks), we'd be looking at 58,242 dead.

Here’s an article I enjoyed. And it’s from a source you should approve of. 😉

Wonder what the percentage of Corona deaths would and will be if the millions of people who have this and have almost no symptoms, were included?
Do people really not get this aspect with all of their sky is falling plague of the world rhetoric about this?

Do we sensationalize and post every death caused by other illnesses each year?

Do people not realize that those with co morbidity’s are always at a greater risk of dying from any virus/bacterial infection/disease?

And before that tired tired accusation of me not taking this seriously is thrown out...I do believe in the social distancing, practicing good hygiene and doing our best to mitigate the spread of this very contagious virus.

Ahh. A statement that can go back literally hundreds of years.

Sure, but not many have been so open and proud of it as this current president.

As I've said before, it's what happens when you're used to having daddy pay for everything. You become oblivious to the workings of the real world.

Haha. It'd be interesting to see your take on what you'd wager my approved sites lists consists of. I digress ;)

So what's the better option..over or under sensationalizing it? Over.

If we took the advice of some, including the president, and went about our business and kept it low key, there could be potentially tens of thousands more deaths and preventable illnesses. If staying inside for a couple months is what it takes to 'flatten the curve' of this thing, then i'm all for it. We're still a year off likely before a vaccine is developed.

It may annoy people who don't have it, but because we don't yet have a vaccine for it, because it has around a 2x higher transmission rate and is deadlier than the flu..with many complications we're just learning about..yes, it is important that we make it as clear as we can that people need to take preventative measures now and stay inside as much as they can.

The percentage of deaths would be exactly the same because the figure I used is the current deaths per million population, which has nothing to do with how many people are infected. It's a valid figure to discuss given the similarity of our trajectory to Italy's, and I'm sorry that you lack the maturity to discuss it.

    Staying inside? Not for me.

I have been canoeing 3 of the last seven days. Great to get some sun - that vitamin D helps fend off the bad stuff.

I know not everyone has that luxury, but I wonder how being cooped up inside is going to actually hurt in some ways.

As I understand it, one theory of why there is a season for viruses (such as the flu) is that people stay inside piled on each other in the winter and get outside in the open in warmer weather.

I have no idea whether Hillary and her admin would handle this more efficiently/effectively.
And I’m not saying that as a smart arse.
I am not a Trump fan. I happen to dislike him less than Hillary and the other prominent Dems.
I am not a Socialist, and there is no Democratic Party anymore imo. So I’m ‘left’ (pun) with Trump.
I’ve not spoken one time on how he and his admin have handled this.
Also as an aside, I would not want to be the POTUS. Wake up and every problem on the planet is yours. Unenviable no matter who’s in office imo.
If you are not going to answer the question I asked, I'd much rather you just say you don't want to answer the question than do what you did.

I have no idea whether Hillary and her admin would handle this more efficiently/effectively.
This is not an answer to the question I asked you.

I'll answer it for you since you decided to dodge it. The only thing trump could do to make the current situation worst is if he continued to refuse to use the full power of the office to help US citizens fight this damned disease. There is nothing about Hillary Clinton's past in public service that indicates that she would have 1. Ignored the warning about the corona virus if she had been informed of the possible impact, 2. Lied about the impact of the virus to the public nearly every day, 3. Played favorites with which states get the help they need first (Florida vs New York). These are things that trump has done and continues to do.

I don't care if you think you are not a trump fan. I don't care what you think you know about being a socialist. I don't care about your opinion of the democratic party. I don't care that you wouldn't want to be the president right now. I actually wish I was the president right now.

This is the easiest that the job has been in trump's time in office. All he had to do was take the threat seriously when he was informed about it instead of ignoring it. All he had to do was listen to the experts and inform the public instead of lying constantly. And finally all he had to do is give the damned states what they are asking for in emergency assistance instead of playing favorites and telling the VP not to return the calls of governors because they didn't show the right amount of "appreciation".

Maybe if/after you lose a loved one to this virus, you'll see it differently. This has been the worst possible response to a pandemic in US history. By default that means anyone else couldn't be worst. I actually expected an honest response from you. My bad. The joke was on me.

It would be good to know how many people are positive yet not asymptomatic, as well as those who are are symptomatic yet not tested.

It would also be good to know how many deaths occurring daily due to Covid-19 statistics are not being "officially attributed" to Covid-19. Anecdotal evidence from people I know in health care suggests that is indeed happening - thought the extent it unknown.

Answering all of these questions require widespread testing, which we still don't have.

As far as the "sky is falling" comment, if 100,000,000 Americans contract this disease, we can expect 1 to 2 million deaths based on current information, and if our hospitals are overrun and medical health professionals get sick en masse, it's going to be on the high end of that scale.

You're wasting your time. The only response you'll get is the same regurgitated nonsense about elites vs non elites, mysterious deaths, and sheep: thinking one isn't one when he's actually the textbook definition.
Turns out your were right after all. I didn't think it was a hard question to answer. The current response has been the worst in our history and there's not much else that could make it any worst. By default that means that anyone would be better than what we have right now. But in answering that question, it would blow up the whole "I truly think Clinton is worst" nonsense.

Yeah I'm getting out a lot too, I'm just saying reducing the amount of contact with frequently traveled areas or other people. Some folks live in the country and don't really have to worry about it, others (myself) live in downtown areas where even walking outside of my place I could get exposed to the germs of hundreds of people. I've actually enjoyed staying inside and to myself lately -- all of the social hustle and bustle has quieted down. On most weekends i'd be running out the door or trying not to miss an event. It's nice being able to just focus on side projects, work etc. since I know it won't last forever anyway.

Right now what I see is that there are two sides to this virus situation. There's one side that things that the media is over-exaggerating the impact and the lack of response to the pandemic and then there's the side that thinks the response has been completely incompetent and believe that there will be serious consequences to the population. I've never wanted to be wrong about anything but I hope I'm wrong about the media and I hope they really are over-exaggerating this. The alternative has real-world consequences. A lot of Americans will die.

So, the FDA has just issued an emergency order approving the malaria drugs for treatment of the virus.

Politico has an article on it for anyone who is interested.
