I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

And it's going to be met with conspiracists alleging it was staged to dupe the sheep...

I do think it's going to be important for influencers of every kind to show support for a vaccine to help encourage public participation.

I heard an idea that I think is at least interesting on the surface; tying a financial stimulus to getting the vaccine. Bribery is the American way! But if it encourages people to get vaccinated, who might not have wanted to, and pumps billions into the economy at the consumer level (yay, vaccinated, going to get plastered at the local bar!) then I think there's merit to the idea.
Not that I expect for it to happen but if the orange moron where to take the vaccine on TV just like his predecessors this would almost guarantee a over 90% vaccination of the country. Because there’s always a few knuckle Heads out there that no matter what they think they know best.

SCOTUS basically steps in and grants an injunction while the state appeal is still pending ("cert before judgment") to rule that CA's Covid restrictions on church gatherings also violate the First Amendment:

We should all call the church and ask them if they value money more than human life because it seems to me that they are willing to put their congregation at risk just for the mere sake of collecting tidings, because we all know that you can stay home and worship your sky fairy

There is more to the capitalistic system we live in that just pumping money into the economy via consumer spending will solve all problems. Remember that corporations live and die not only by consumer spending, but also by investor confidence. A publicly held corporation may not survive investors losing confidence in it, and an injection of cash from the government goes a long way in giving investors the feel their money is safe.

And I know some people don't care if they see a corporation fail, but they don't understand the ramifications of it, especially when it comes to corporations like banks and airlines.

And I am not saying all the money should go to corporations, just that there needs to be a balance.
I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a couple of these large banks fail, i.e. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase Manhattan, these three major corporations have pulled some shady crap in the past and are still doing it now.

I don't agree with providing a financial stimulus for people to take the vaccine. Just make it free and widely available. If that isn't enough to convince people to take it after the last year, then whatever. Once I'm convinced that a safe, effective vaccine is available, then me and mine will be first in line.

I'm tired of trying to convince people what is best for them. They'll get the hint when they keep dying and those of us that take the vaccine don't. And if they're not convinced, bye! I wish they would put it in exactly those terms when public publicity campaign starts up, lol.

Make it a requirement for school registration and other areas of life where vaccinations are already required.

Also, I think paying people to take it will just fuel the "it's not really safe, they're forcing you, bribing you", etc. That population can't be reasoned with, so don't bother.

That being said, some pharmacy's give free gift cards to people who take the flu shot.

Someone said it on NPR, but I can't find the interview.

Once White male unemployment dropped back to something reasonable, suddenly the Senate, or McConnel, couldn't be bothered.

This is just by race, not gender. White males are even better. But, as you'll see, around July White unemployment was back to about 7%.. crisis over kids.

This isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison but is in the same lane.

Another potential example of PPP fraud. How many people work for PV? did this help keep them employed? Did CV-19 materially affect their ability to do 'business'?

DeSantis rolled out his vaccine plan. Seems reasonable at the high level. We'll see. But, I think the first two groups make the most sense.

Residents of long-term care facilities will be the first to receive coronavirus vaccines, according to a rollout plan unveiled late Wednesday by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Once vaccines are approved, they will go, in order, to people living in long-term care facilities, health care workers in high-risk environments and people 65 and older and those with pre-existing medical conditions, he said.
“In Florida, we want to get as much vaccine for our citizens as possible, but we know we will not, nor will any state, have enough to vaccinate everyone right off the bat,” DeSantis said in a pre-recorded video his office released Wednesday night. “So, we’ve had to set priorities.”

I hear you and I'm no fan of corporate welfare....but, there is another side to this outcome, thousands of jobs lost...

There would be a lot of vendors (think small businesses for whom the bank is their biggest, or even only client) who service those companies that go under as well. It would be a massive ripple effect if a large bank goes under. It would take years for the economy (particularly local) to absorb that kind of hit.

I'm not a fan of the TBTF banks, but so much is tied up into them, that they could collapse the short term financial system in a hurry. I mean, think back to what happened when Bear Stearns folded. It would be orders of magnitude worse if a TBTF bank folds.

That said, I don't see something like that happening anytime soon unless the economy goes into a significant tailspin.

Looks like they finally talked this afternoon.

None of the negotiations prior went between Pelosi and McConnell. This is a good sign.

Besides that, and before we go completely off topic... the point stands... why such the uproar over a virus with an (out of context) 97% survival rate, and an 80% rate of recovery with little to no special treatment?

As this is one of very early posts, I wanted to check in with the Infoman to see if his question was answered. Do you get it now or is this still a question that needs a response?

Well, this is where we're at as of yesterday. Those are some sobering numbers. What other virus is doing this?

After months of dealing with covid, having little or no ppe, nurses in India went on strike. The government has stepped in to solve it.

I don't have much to add except I came across this about Katie Porter. The video gets a little choppy towards the end, but I love how she frames things

edit: link directly to the video

The Thanksgiving surge hasn't even started yet. It should really get rolling next week since it takes a week to develop symptoms for most people.
