I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Now that you mention it, a pillow may be the cure. Melania? :hihi:

Disclaimer: Any suggestion that I am advocating that the First Lady use a tool at her disposal to the benefit of all Americans is purely for comedic effect. I do not want Melania to murder her husband. I think. Now if it is in self defense, then....

Speaking of which, are we approaching a place where all Americans have a self-defense case should something sudden happen to Dear Leader? Dude is a clear and present danger to everyone who breathes.

It's like being in a burning house, locked from the inside and the guy with the keys is all "It's a hoax, only the one pillow's burning, the fire will go away like a miracle, smoke's not really that dangerous, maybe we can inject asbestos into you." When are you justified in taking matters into your own hands to take the keys?

I had a chance to take one for the team.

I attended the LSU/Clemson National Title game a few months ago in the Dome, which seems like 5 years ago now.. our seats were in the Plaza, and during the national anthem, Dear Leader was directly in front of me, and i would say, oh about 40 feet away from where i was... We had, and I’m not kidding- a really clear path to him and, I’m sure there were tons of Secret Service nearby- they weren’t very visible or conspicuous... I actually turned to my buddy and said ‘Should we bum rush him?’ He noted that we would instantly become internationally famous, but that definitely wasnt the motivator... The motivator would be to take him out... I’m sure we could have done some pretty decent damage to an obese, out of shape 70-somehting year old in a short time... Of course, I’m guessing that the Secret Service would have been ALL over us before we could reach him- but it was by far the best opportunity, and the closest I, or most any ‘regular Joe’ on the planet, could have ever physically gotten to him in pretty much any setting i can think of... We (probably wisely) decided against it- but had i known I’d be shut-in for months in my own home a mere couple months later, maybe we’d have decided differently....

This is a threadjack, I know, but I have always thought that presidents took too many chances in the public. I was at a National League of Cities convention in DC around 1999 and Bill Clinton walked within a couple of feet of me. I know they can't live in a box, but they all seem to take a lot of risks.

Remember that time Obama got in an elevator with someone who had a gun?

yet another cure, this time pushed by the My Pillow guy
    =======================================

There was nothing soft or fluffy about the way Anderson Cooper took down MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell Tuesday.

Lindell appeared on CNN to discuss his recent assertion that he’d taken part in a July meeting at the White House about using oleandrin — a plant extract that can be fatal if consumed — as a potential therapeutic for coronavirus. Lindell said President Donald Trump was “enthusiastic” about the substance’s possible use.

The statement came after Lindell, known to TV audiences from his commercials for MyPillow, joined the board of Phoenix Biotechnology. The biotech company makes oleandrin; Lindell has a financial stake in the company.

On Tuesday, the CNN anchor repeatedly drove home the point that Lindell was telling people to use an untested and potentially lethal substance, and that he stood to make a lot of money off of it..................

I get that same feeling about Senate Republicans. "Senator Collins, have you learned your lesson about letting narcissistic maniacs run the country?"

“I’ve done my due diligence” says the guy sued for claiming his pillow helped with snoring, migraines and fibromyalgia and says he’s been given authority from God.

"You see what's going on in New Zealand?" Trump said at a campaign rally yesterday. "They beat it, they beat it, it was like front page they beat it ... because they wanted to show me something. The problem is ... big surge in New Zealand, you know, it's terrible. We don't want that."

(reaching pretty low to claim 13 cases is a huge surge but I doubt his followers care too much about little details such as that)

Meanwhile I saw where three universities shut down on campus learning for at least some time (2-7 weeks) after only being open one week and seeing spikes in cases. Who could have predicted that?

UNC Chapel Hill, Notre Dame, and Michigan, IIRC. (Third one might be wrong)

I am going to pimp my University for a moment.

Purdue, in my opinion, has done an outstanding job of handling this. They allowed for on campus learning or total distance learning, student choice.

If you choose to come on campus, you must sign an agreement to: wear a mask all the time no exceptions, (they give each student a Covid pack with Purdue masks, hand sanitizer, etc). you must take a test prior to coming on campus, no exceptions. You have your temperature taken entering each building. Lecture halls have been modified to keep distance. Recitations are online. Lab hours are increased and limited to appointment only. Professors are behind plexiglass in the front of the room. You must take a Covid test weekly. No off campus activity allowed. Dorms community areas closed. Cafeteria is bagged and eaten in the room or outside, sitting area not open.

Don’t like it or want to follow it? Can’t come. You sign an agreement and follow it or suffer the consequences with punishment up to expulsion for violating any rule.

Now that is proactive imo. Real world, real solutions.

MY buddy was in charge of Tulanes testing for students and faculty.

Everyone received an email w/ a qscan code. When you arrived in NO- go straight to Hyatt. There, you are scanned and test given and remain there for 48 hrs ( until test results arrive - oh and they have created their own lab to handle the testing ) at which point you are released to campus.
they are doing 1000 tests a day- since July 27 - 7 days a week.
Same at campus- mask required, social distancing - the whole 9.

If Universities can do this in a span of 6 weeks or so, what excuses are there for ANY other University or government????

    thats what gets me.

I can't say this article and the study it references is a suprise. Some of the demands of some of the teachers union's had nothing to do with student or teacher safety like defund the police, universal income, and closing charter schools.
