I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Austin, TX is getting hit hard by the fear and paranoia concerning this. They canceled SXSW which is 10 days of big profits that are baked into their annual projections. Some businesses rely on it so much that they're talking about having to take out loans just to stay open or possibly just close for good.

I heard on NPR that there's a group of memes going around suggesting that you just drink bleach to kill or prevent the coronavirus. Needless to say, the doctor they had on who's been studying coronavius for 38 years said that drinking bleach won't do anything to the virus but it could kill you- depending on how much you drink.

People can't really be that stupid, can they?
Sadly, yes. Quacks and charlatans have been pushing what is essentially industrial bleach as a magic cure for pretty much anything for a while now. It's no surprise they'd add this to the list.

That was the smart thing to do.

Sxsw is a huge thing with plenty of music people that tour and get exposed to lots and lots of people. The tech end of that also has lots of people that travel.

This early in this it truly was a wise decision. Now six months from now it might have not been the right move.

That’s interesting.. i lived in Austin for a year, and I’m wondering exactly what types of businesses there are ‘make or break’ due to SXSW.. most of the restaurants near where SXSW takes place seem to be packed year-round.. Uber drivers make a killing every weekend, and seem to do well during the week as well.. The entertainment venues i knew of dont seem to have any trouble drawing crowds all throughout the year.. i wonder what specific businesses will possibly go under due to the cancellation of SXSW.

The same sort that depend on Jazz Fest. Vendors who print thousands of t-shirts or who gear up to sell 100k worth of food over a short time can't adapt easily. Years and years ago, we did merchandising for a huge concert series in the FL Panhandle and we would have 100k worth of T-shirts specifically printed. If we had an event canceled I'd have eaten that completely.

I agree. Was just mentioning what the report said. You have people coming from all around the world/county who could get infected there and then bring it back to their home state/country.

I would imagine mostly new businesses in their first year or so. I've spent plenty of time on Sixth St. and all around Austin and agree that most places should be fine in the long run - but ten days of excessive business compared to their regular business will still hurt them regardless. One business in particular who was being interviewed said they were going to use the extra profits from SXSW to renovate the bar. Now they'll have to put it off for another year.

How do we know that some of these people would not have died from walking under a piano
Why would the WH tweet that to begin with? Isn’t Scavino his comm director or something? That seems to mock the sick and dying. What am I missing?

"Nothing can stop what's coming" is apparently a QAnon quote.

Good lord, those are some sick puppies that believe that crap.

My Word... That is a hero for certain and definitely defines integrity and honor. A toast to your Unkle.
Appreciated. It was quite the surprise when he came back home and introduced us to aunt Eileen and my new cousins :hihi:

They got shut down either dropping a patrol or picking up a patrol. Last words from him were, "promise me you'll take care of my family"... and my uncle did.

Anyway back to our politically induced griping.

How is it racist? And if it is, how am I going to call my monthly Brazilian now?

The idea is that both the motivation and the effect will be to become more suspicious of China in general by branding the virus as something "Chinese".

It seems pretty minor, but I also find it weird that people have switched from calling it Covid-19 which is pretty simple to the Wuhan virus. Seems like an unnecessary rebranding.

It may be just me, but I don't see it as anything different from calling a meatball and Italian meatball, a standoff a Mexican standoff, jerk chicken Jamaican jerk chicken, or the aforementioned wax job a Brazilian. It's just where it originated.

Do you consider the branding Ebola branding to be such a case of branding to make people become more suspicious of the Congo, or as the tweet suggests, even racist?
    How about West Nile fever?
    Zika virus?
    Norovirus?

I don't necessarily consider it racist. I don't know the motivation of those who decided to start calling it the Wuhan virus instead of what had been commonly referred to as Covid-19, you'd have to ask them.

I could be wrong buy didn't this start in Wuhan, China? Hence why people have called it the Wuhan virus?
