I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

Dozens of states are warning that their social services are under financial strain due to the volume and pace of unemployment requests from federal employees who have been fired in the DOGE-led job cuts.

At least 100,000 employees have been terminated across various federal agencies and departments over the last seven weeks. Tens of thousands of probationary employees have also been let go and more reductions are expected in the near future.

Federal workers say they have no time to prepare for unemployment and there is minimal communication with the administration about obtaining benefits. They are left scrambling to obtain unemployment with their states so they can continue paying their bills and keeping food on the table.

As a result, states are being inundated with social service requests for unemployment with little to no warning and dwindling financial resources, 19 state attorney generals said in a court filing last week……..

More than two-thirds of U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett’s constituents present during a telephone town hall said they don’t approve of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

Barrett ran surveys between taking questions during his first telephone town hall Monday evening. 70% of the participants indicated they do not support the department’s mission, which was presented as being "to streamline the federal government and reduce spending."

The first-term member of Congress defended the department earlier in the call.

“It seems like every single person prefaces a lot of their, even disagreement, by saying, ‘Hey, I know there's a lot of waste and fraud in federal spending, and we’ve got to rein that in, but this is wrong for this or that reason,’” Barrett said. “So, it seems like we've kind of accepted the premise that there's a lot of problems.”

Barrett, who narrowly flipped a district previously represented by now-U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat, said his office has received numerous calls about Musk’s role in the federal government.

But he said the amount of power Musk has to make decisions about the federal government as a special government employee in the Trump Administration is being misconstrued.

“DOGE is making recommendations to agency heads,” Barrett said. “It's up to them to do the best implementation of achieving what every American should expect, that the tax dollars they send to Washington, D.C., are being used prudently for the right things, for the right purposes, and not being abused, wasted or spent on things that shouldn't be done.”..............

This is poppycock nonsense. Take it from the horse's Trump mouth saying what Elon says, goes.
