I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

I can see that. Ramasmarmy is like the guy that the bully lets hang around while occasionally stuffing him in a locker as a “joke”.

Yes.

Not against the idea of where can we be more efficient.

But the bean counter way of doing more with less, always leads to mistakes, and potential catastrophe.

Against a complete lack of accountability or at least transparency. A report would be most welcome.

Against the early signs of just cutting funding.
 
It sounds like the possibly more reasonable people are leaving. Nobody wants to work with Musk, I would imagine.
 
Evidently the head of the FAA resigned on Inauguration Day under pressure from Musk, who didn’t like him because he wasn’t approving his space flights fast enough or something. Then an entire air safety committee was disbanded as well as the hiring freeze.

He is a fascist and a Himmler wannabe.

Unfortunately, no one will have the power to stop him. All he needs to do is fuel Trump's paranoia, and Trump will stand by him unwaveringly, supporting his efforts to eliminate any opposition or dissent—especially when it serves his and Musk's interests.
 
Nobody in government is meeting the moment here. Neither Musk nor his henchmen should be able to access sensitive data like this. Once he controls it, what will stop him from just shutting off government payments he doesn’t like? A court order? Why would he pay any attention to that?

Remember when Musk said there must be some hardships that we will have to go through? Yeah….

Things are moving pretty fast. Somebody in government might want to get a handle on things.

What was that about "unelected bureaucrats"? This is so much worse, a technocrat billionaire and richest man in the world, with scant knowledge of how the US government function, controlling the US Treasury and accessing sensitive data and money at will. What could possibly go wrong? Where is all of your screaming and unhinged rage when it's actually needed Republicans and Republican voters? Your silence deafening and acquiescence cowardly.
