Yeesh. Hegseth is a smirking, smarmy piece of schlitz.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to head the U.S. Transportation Department said Wednesday electric vehicles should pay to use roads.

Most revenue for federally-funded road repairs is collected through taxes on diesel and gasoline, which EVs do not pay. "They should pay for use of our roads. How to do that, I think, is a little more challenging," said Sean Duffy, a former Republican lawmaker at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee.........

I don't disagree with finding a way for EV's drivers to also chip in on revenues for road maintenance, just not sure how you'd do it.

A gas tax is pretty simple -- the more you drive, the more gas you use, the more taxes you pay when buying the gas. I assume most EV's are recharged at home, though, so, again, I'm not sure how do you find a way to measure road usage.

Maybe the tires? I guess they could throw an extra tax on EV tires every time they need to be replaced.

Are EV tires different?

Also how much would the tax have to be?

You put gas in the car every week or two how often do you get a new set of tires?

It appears that special equipment/plug is needed to charge the EV for home and public

Figure if a way to add a charge for charging?(ha!)

This is the added cost of doing the right thing

On EE someone told a story about a county (in Georgia maybe?) with a severe drought, the public was asked to cut back on their water usage, the public did, the water company was making a lot less money and jacked up their rates to compensate

They already do in Ohio. The tag fees for hybrids are at least double regular vehicles.

But here is a better idea make the gas/diesel guzzlers pay more. Drive EV/hybrid development.

Here, the vehicle registration tax for EVs and hybrids is about half of that for gas-powered vehicles, while diesel vehicles incur significantly higher costs, collected every six months.

On top of that, there are taxes on gas, diesel, and electricity usage. Electricity prices here vary significantly depending on the time of day and weather conditions—on windy days, prices can drop to nearly zero due to the extensive offshore and onshore wind farms. Many people take advantage of this by using intelligent appliances on timers during the night when electricity is cheapest.

This tax structure is designed to promote the transition to renewable energy sources. Over the next five years, further adjustments will align with these goals, including an expected ban on the sale of new gas and diesel cars by 2030.

Some of the taxes collected on electricity are allocated to funding the expansion of the EV charging grid, as well as road maintenance and other infrastructure projects. This ensures that the transition to renewable energy and electric vehicles is supported by the necessary infrastructure while also addressing broader public needs.

I think tire's for EV's need to be thicker, as EV's are heavier than gas powered cars (I think I read that somewhere). But I just suggested them as something that has to be purchased periodically due to road usage. Not sure what the appropriate tax would be.

For arguments sake, the Fed gas tax is $.184/gal (diesel is $.244/gal). Let's just say cars get an average of 25 miles/gal, so that $.184/gal turns comes out to about $.007/mile. I just googled that EV tires get from 20000-40000 miles depending on use, so let's just say they get 30,000. If you multiply 30,000 miles $.007/mile you end up with $210 tax on a set of four tires.

The schadenfreude of watching Republicans give us the first convicted felon president. This clown who is of such horrible morale fiber. He has to promise to not drink on the job.
We are supposed to take the word of a man who has broken every oath he has ever taken? The GOP is the party of criminals, adulterers and drunks.

Watching Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth demonstrate his appalling lack of credentials, knowledge, and character for the job for which he was nominated I am compelled to ask: Is the Trump administration running a DEI program for incompetent, unqualified, and/or ethically compromised Whites?

Considering Hegseth, election denier Attorney General Pam Bondi, WWE exec Linda McMahon for secretary of education, and vaccine denier, brain-worm victim Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for Health and Human Services, one must conclude Republicans are not sending us their best. (Or, the more alarming alternative…they are sending their best.)…..

Moreover, “Senate Democrats on Monday said that an F.B.I. background check on Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick to lead the Pentagon, omitted key details on major allegations against him, in part because it did not include interviews with critical witnesses,” the New York Times reported.

“One missed opportunity came when the bureau did not interview one of Mr. Hegseth’s ex-wives before its findings were presented to senators last week, according to people familiar with the bureau’s investigation.” Missed? Or intentionally skipped? It’s unfathomable that such a critical witness would have simply been overlooked.

It is no coincidence that these Democratic women on the committee, including Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), and of course Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) showed themselves infinitely more qualified to head the Pentagon.

And yet, a man with a history of drinking, a list of financial and sexual scandals (which he denies or claims were merely “anonymous smears”), who possesses absolutely no strategic or diplomatic expertise is president-elect Donald Trump’s choice.

While MAGA Republicans (including Hegseth) have genuflected at the altar of “meritocracy”—casting aspersions on women and non-Whites in positions of authority in the military, the Los Angeles fire department, and the Supreme Court—they suspend all critical evaluation of TV hosts, tech bros, and billionaires. The latter they presume qualified………

Louisiana already does this with Hybrids (I believe) and EVs (for certain). They pay higher registration fees then gas vehicles.

It’s literally a kakocracy, a government of shirt.

Judas K. Priest, I just saw an ad from Barnes & Noble about a book by Hegseth titled The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free. It allegedly “explores” society’s “view” of the military.

I doubt he is capable and competent to write a book.

It’s like the mean girl everyone knew in seventh grade is in charge of the most powerful nation on earth. What could go wrong?
