Yesterday Mike Johnson announced a CR for the House to pass - to continue funding through March (so the new Congress can take it up) and provide additional disaster relief. It also includes a raise for Congress.

Today Trump blasted the resolution and Elon threatened anyone who votes for it with being voted out of office. He also said the GOP shouldn’t vote on anything until Trump is in office - which means a shutdown of about a month.

Trump is already responsible for the longest shut down in history (35 days) - welcome back to Trump chaos.

Current funding expires at midnight on Friday (Saturday morning).

I think it has more to do with the Fed meeting this afternoon but this doesn’t help. Fed announced that there may only be .5 point instead of 1 point rate cut next year. All indexes dropped right after that announcement.

Yes that’s true - and there are other incoming Trump reasons for that as well, but I’ll agree that the market action wasn’t actually tied to the emerging shutdown crisis. It doesn’t help though.

Fed Chair Powell mentioned that they are worried about the incoming administration policies. The Fed has been doing a great job juggling the economy and inflation with their monetary policies. Hoping that Powell survives Trump administration.

    President Musk killed the bill.

The Elon-bros are calling their representation.

Even the addition of much-needed disaster aid, some $100.4 billion in the aftermath of hurricanes and other natural calamities that ravaged states this year, plus $10 billion in economic assistance for farmers failed to win over the budget-slashing GOP. A number of Republicans had been waiting for Trump to signal whether they should vote yes or no.

“This should not pass,” Musk posted on his social media site X in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

One lawmaker said office phone lines were flooded with calls from constituents

“My phone was ringing off the hook,” said Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky. “The people who elected us are listening to Elon Musk.”

Chaos is the plan and has been the plan all along. They want to crash the market to reap the profit. And if they can do it while Biden is still president, they can blame him

This what you get when you have a coalition of various groups with no actual plan.

Religionists want a theocracy to varying degrees.
Anti-choice people want abortion banned in all cases but, generally, care nothing about children beyond that.
Anti-anyone who isn’t cis want anyone who isn’t cis to have rights taken away.

Those three have somethings in common but not really enough to be coherent.

Anti-taxers just hate taxes but want government programs that they want. They just don’t want to pay for them.
Anti-(non-existent)deep starters just hate government without actually being able to define what the “deep state” beyond Trump’s blathering.
“Professional” anti-governmenters just want to sew chaos. They have no actual idea what the consequences would be. There is assumption by some that the non-existent free market would solve all the resultant chaos. They are wrong.

Those three again have some overlap but not enough nor do they have anywhere near enough with the religionists.

Racists want everyone who isn’t White to bow to those who are. They want government to support that view but they couch it in anti-immigration language.

    And so it goes…

Oh, as for the oligarchs? They care about nothing beyond making sure their needs are met. They do have common ground with the anti-taxers but are aware that elimination of any and all taxes may endanger their position.

This is really the first truly dangerous amalgam of so-called populism to be an existential threat to the country.

This is great. It's good that people in the south and farmers that voted these arsonist into office get this first taste of the scorched earth approach with the lack of disaster relief and farm subsidies.

Yeah, and just to clarify what you mean - the Johnson CR had allocations for new infusions of disaster relief and farm support.

Rand Paul says Elon should be Speaker

They have no genuine interest in serving the people who elected them. Instead, they act as chaos pilots, more focused on "one-upping the Democrats" than on accomplishing meaningful work. For example, rather than passing legislation to address rising healthcare costs or climate change, they waste time on performative stunts like government shutdown threats, defunding critical agencies, or holding hearings filled with baseless conspiracy theories. Their priorities seem to revolve around enriching themselves and their donors—such as giving massive tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy—while chasing publicity with inflammatory soundbites and social media theatrics. Meanwhile, the real issues facing everyday Americans, like affordable housing, infrastructure, and education, are ignored.

Seems like both parties are lacking in service to voters. Those things aren't new, and both parties have had ample opportunities to do something to address those issues.
Government shutdowns seem to be the norm now, and it only costs us taxpayers money, as the government workers will suffer if they miss a paycheck, at least they will get that money when the govt. opens again. Not so good for civilians relying on government payments.
I would love to see a bill for a balanced budget and that Congress can not leave until a bill is passed and sent to the President.
We are so far in debt now that the interest payments will soon start hindering some pet projects for Congress-critters of all stripes. There are seemingly no fiscal conservatives in Congress with any power.

Lol, always "both parties". Such a lazy and tired line with no actual substance.

Looking forward to the chaos hitting those that think they're somehow protected from all this and that they don't depend on the federal government to do some really basic things.

Denying that both parties have worked to shut down the government at times is really ignorant because there are lots of sources for you to use.
I see the difference is that I can see the Republicans' fault in all of it while you can't see any in Democrats.
Here is one source for you but feel free to look for others:

No need to panic, the government shutdowns rarely last too long, as Congress-critters must bring home the bacon.
This clearly isn't the first shutdown, nor will it be the last.

That doesn't prove your point you think it does when you look at the context and duration of those shutdowns.

Do I sound panicked? I think this is comical, because Republicans have become clowns. From my standpoint as a Democrat voter, I don't want Democrats to stand in Republicans way. Give them and the American people everything they voted for. That way at least we can know what fruits their policies produce and no body can blame Democrats for it.
