By 6th or 7th grade, if parents haven't talked to kids about pregnancy and STDs (let's face it, many won't/don't), there's the potential for big problems in those kids' lives.

At every level of childhood, having age appropriate books available that relate stories of acceptance and inclusion are important. I'm not saying you want photo-realistic picture books that could be mistaken for Penthouse and Penthouse Fan Forum type stories, but books that discuss feelings about crushes, and delicate sexuality issues, should be available. Otherwise, kids are going to get their sexual information from other kids - 100% without their parent's input or knowledge. Better for that information to come from a book than from hand-me-down disinformation - which is going to happen no matter what, but at least having a book available is another source of fact based knowledge.
