US Rep. (D from MN) DEAN PHILLIPS is challenging President Biden to represent the Democratic Party for President.
I only discovered this today (1/20/2024)
He is wealthy and expects to stay in the race even if it appears hopeless...because Biden is in his 80s and "ya never what could happen"

    1) What do Democratic posters on madaboutpolitics think of him? Please consider separating your thoughts about him as a D congressman from your thoughts about his decision to challenge Biden. I'd enjoy it if you answered both...yet separately. Just a request that you naturally can ignore if you wish.
    2) I anticipate that many will state that he is wasting his time, yet could his "waste of time candidacy" never the less harm Biden politically?

What makes you think that? I mean you can choose to think this way if you want, but there isn’t any reason to think that way that I can tell.

If Trump wins, there will be riots, and i will be cheering the people rioting.

If Biden wins, MAGA will riot.

It will only get worse every cycle.

If I am wrong, we will know in about a year i guess.

I don’t think there will be riots if Trump wins, at least not more than sporadic violence of the type that can break out after protests here and there. I’m also not sure MAGA will riot if Biden wins. Most of the people with that inclination are either in jail or taking part in our justice system as we speak. Anyone else with that inclination who didn’t riot in 2021 will see the examples made of them and think twice.

I would think the amount of violence will be higher with a Biden victory than a Trump one, but I don’t think there will be the type of violence we saw on Jan 6. I could be wrong, JMO.

How long would you turn away and stay silent ?

That's a powerfully non-hyperbolic ad. Everything depicted in that ad has happened recently, in fact there are worse things that have actually happened than what is shown in the ad.

All is not lost, but we have "run out of road."

You only say that because you don’t know what it’s like to not have freedom, IMO.
And also making the mistake of thinking that authoritarian rulers will leave them in peace. Authoritarians eventually turn on everyone, including their own.

There is no peace under authoritarian rule. There's only obedience or punishment. There's nothing peaceful about either of those.

So, Dean couldn't even beat out Marianne for 2nd place tonight...

Sadly you’re correct. Williamson is very odd, so she gets some very fringe supporters. I believe the few that are supporting Dean are much more pragmatic centrists. Williamson would probably max out at 10% of the general electorate. If she were the candidate, there would be a mass exodus to a 3rd party. Although Dean isn’t doing well, he would hold Democrats and attract a huge amount of independents.

No, he wouldn’t, IMO. He’s playing footsy with Elon, Yang, and that other billionaire I can’t remember right now. He’s an empty suit, IMO, and he would be a disaster. Just another billionaire who thinks he knows better than the voters.

Dean loses to Uncommitted tonight. I don't even know who the hell Uncommitted is, but I know they beat Dean tonight by a lot... :biglol:

Well that's a good sense of humor you have.
Yet is it possible that the 14.9% of people are attempting to send a message that they don't want Joe Biden...nor do they want Dean Phillips....is that likely the explanation?

No, it’s actually not the explanation. It’s a protest vote, these voters will (most of them) end up voting for Biden in Nov. that’s how it worked out in 2012 when there was a similar protest vote against Obama. Virtually none of the Uncommitted voters will vote for Trump.

So what's to say now that Marianne Williamson, no longer in the race, has now jumped ahead of him...?

I guess it's easier to say Democrats do not want Phillips. Full stop.

Oh sure. They won't vote for Trump and neither will I. that doesn't mean that my pondering if they are sending a signal that they wish that their NON Trump candidate was someone other than Biden or Dean P.
Edit: I just saw an article that had the opinion that much of the "Uncommitted" vote was a
protest vote relating to Biden's support toward Israel.

Phillips with another poor showing in MI.

Also interesting - Biden beat Trump by around 160k votes in Michigan in 2020. This year, looks like uncommitted may pose a significant issue to him winning with around 101k protest votes counted thus far:

I think most of those uncommitted will come home from Biden, just like I think the same for Trump of those who voted for Haley. The only question is how many?
