    I am in the camp that Trump must -not should- be impeached. If not this President, for this behavior, then what bar would have to be cleared to merit impeachment?

    Impeachment not only sends a signal to the country and the world that fomenting a coup is unacceptable and will be punished, but it also removes much of the threat Trump could pose going forward as, I understand it, he would lose his pension, his access to daily security briefings, free medical care and other amenities and benefits afforded to former Presidents. If impeached, he would not meet the definition of a Former President under the Former Presidents Act. I don't think it is clear whether he would continue to receive Secret Service protection.

    You think we'll get a 'You can't handle the truth!' sprinkled in for good measure followed by Schoen producing his own gavel to beat on the lecturn and yelling to declare a mistrial?
     
    This argument is so stupid. He was president when he was impeached. He was impeached for actions while he was president. Now that he is the former president, all that doesn't just go away.

    But all of the republican lackeys will be walking out of that building talking about how good an argument is was.

    All one Senator has to ask the defense team is, "So if your argument is that Trump can't be impeached because he is no longer president, does that mean that he can be indicted in federal court for "inciting a riot", if Justice Department officials feel there is sufficient evidence of such charges?" Watch them skate around that question.
     
    I must admit I’m surprised at some of the Rs voting no here. They know better but they are being spineless. Okay, check that, I am not surprised at all. May they all be tied to this shameful act against our country forever.

    Haven't been watching, but have they determined whether the vote on the impeachment question will be a secret ballot?
     
    They haven’t said so, so I doubt it will be. It would be difficult to keep it a secret anyway, as the trumpists in the Senate would no doubt rat out any who voted to convict.

    Most Republicans can’t vote for impeachment because to do so would be to convict themselves. No one who parroted “Stop the Steal” or rejected a states electors would be safe from similar scrutiny.

    No commission like the Truth & Reconciliation of South Africa can be empowered to resolve what happened.

    The only solution is for the Justice Dept to charge every person who entered the Capitol with sedition. By securing convictions, you build the case for inciting sedition against Trump. That’s when Trump needs to be tried like the private citizen he is. The trial itself makes clear he is not above the law whatever the outcome.
