I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

Trump's lies about election fraud, alongside his disastrous handling of the coronavirus pandemic, will ensure that he is regarded as one of the worst presidents in American history - and arguably the worst.

But he didn’t do it alone.

Republican politicians who should have known better - like Texas Senator Ted Cruz - lent legitimacy to Trump's dangerous fantasies of election fraud in a cynical effort to boost their standing with the party base.

Cruz was among the dozen senators who planned to object to the election results in Congress on Thursday (AEDT); over 100 House Republicans were expected to do the same.

Many of Trump's allies in the conservative media also promoted Trump's false claims in an effort to boost their ratings.

January 6, 2021, will now live in infamy as one of most shameful days in American history. Trump and his enablers played with fire and American democracy got burnt.

No one other than President Donald Trump himself is more responsible for Wednesday’s coup attempt at the U.S. Capitol than one Joshua David Hawley, the 41-year-old junior senator from Missouri, who put out a fundraising appeal while the siege was underway.

This, Sen. Hawley, is what law-breaking and destruction look like. This is what mobs do. This is not a protest, but a riot. One woman was shot and has died, The Washington Post reported, while lawmakers were sheltering in place.

No longer can it be asked, as George Will did recently of Hawley, “Has there ever been such a high ratio of ambition to accomplishment?” Hawley’s actions in the last week had such impact that he deserves an impressive share of the blame for the blood that’s been shed.

This guy should be recognized on the Senate floor for his actions.

They feel aggrieved. They feel like their religion is under attack.
 
Remember when Pelosi brought up the 25th amendment process back in October. I remember people getting upset on the board about it.

That doesn't make their feelings valid and it doesn't absolve Trump for inciting this and refusing to clearly and unequivocally denounce it. There is no both sides here. These are seditionists in the throws of an insurrection.
