There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

    =================
A constant refrain from President Trump and his supporters following his loss in last month’s presidential election is bafflement that President-elect Joe Biden could have received more than 80 million votes nationally.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that this figure is itself suspect, though given both population growth and how polarizing Trump has been, it’s really not terribly surprising. But it’s easy to see how, if you’re Trump, it would be. After all, the president lives in a White House where most of his staff and advisers are loyal to the point of sycophancy.

His media diet largely consists of his Twitter feed and conservative cable-news channels, where even interviews with Democratic politicians raise Trump’s ire. His forays out of the White House have, for months, been almost entirely to political rallies or to properties where his customers pay for access.

In other words, Trump lives in a bubble. What’s underrecognized, though, is that many of his supporters probably join him there.

In September, Pew Research Center released polling data showing that most Americans knew few people who supported a different presidential candidate than they did. About 4 in 10 supporters of both Trump and Biden indicated that they had no friends planning on voting for the other candidate.

That idea probably holds true not only for friendships but for communities. In 2016, we looked at precinct-level results to determine that a large percentage of voters in a number of states lived in neighborhoods where the margin between Trump and Hillary Clinton was at least 50 percent. The states where the most people lived in such neighborhoods were heavily ones that supported Trump.....

.......The end result of all of this is a large group of Trump supporters who rely on Fox News for information, have no Biden-supporting friends and live in densely pro-Trump areas. While this is still a small portion of the country, it means that there are a lot of people who might find it hard to believe that Biden could attract so much support. A small portion of tens of millions of people is a lot of people — and if a small portion of that group is willing to attend rallies or tweet concerns, the volume of noise around the issue can be cacophonous........

I'd be interested in seeing this map for 2020

Barry county is literally the middle of no where in the southern/central part of michigan.

I wonder if he was paid off. I bet even just a simple $5000-10,000 would do a huge amount for a sheriff election campaign in BFE.

How in the world is this guy still a sheriff, I mean WTH???

The problem in 2016 was just that people named Dar Leaf walk the earth. The problem in 2020 is that people with the name Dar are not only sheriffs but also that they share the same moronic views on democracy as our soon to be former president. It's going to take a lot longer than one four year term to undo the fascism that Trump unleashed on this country.

And it's already been tossed out like the garbage it is.

Meanwhile in The House of Representatives, accessory to rape, Gym Jordan had this to say:
Asked if Trump should concede next Monday, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio said bluntly: "No. No way, no way, no way."

"We should still try to figure out exactly what took place here. And as I said that includes, I think, debates on the House floor -- potentially on January 6," Jordan, a trusted Trump confidant, told CNN.

He's more annoying than Steve Scalise. They're really bosom buddies if you think about it (but I really don't wanna think about it).

    Not giving up dammit...

President Trump called the speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives twice during the past week to make an extraordinary request for help reversing his loss in the state, reflecting a broadening pressure campaign by the president and his allies to try to subvert the 2020 election result.

The calls, confirmed by House Speaker Bryan Cutler’s office, make Pennsylvania the third state where Trump has directly attempted to overturn a result since he lost the election to former vice president Joe Biden. He previously reached out to Republicans in Michigan, and on Saturday he pressured Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) in a call to try to replace that state’s electors.

The president’s outreach to Pennsylvania’s Republican House leader came after his campaign and its allies decisively lost numerous legal challenges in the state in both state and federal court. Trump has continued to press his baseless claims of widespread voting irregularities both publicly and privately.

“The president said, ‘I’m hearing about all these issues in Philadelphia, and these issues with your law,’ ” said Cutler spokesman Michael Straub, describing the House speaker’s two conversations with Trump. “ ‘What can we do to fix it?’ ”
A White House spokesman declined to comment on the calls to Cutler, and a Trump campaign spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
Cutler told the president that the legislature had no power to overturn the state’s chosen slate of electors, Straub said.

I was reading about Jordan’s idea of delaying the vote to accept the results of the election. It’s not all that unusual, evidently. Several D representatives wanted to do the same in 2016, I read, but Biden gaveled them down, telling them they had no issues to discuss. I wonder if Pence will do the same?

If I understand correctly, the only way to force a “debate” is if a senator joins with a representative to ask for it. I think it’s only happened one other time, and that time the debate was quickly over and the results of the electors was affirmed because it was just a few crackpots that wanted to make a big deal.

Well, I hope Pence has the sense to do the right thing. We'll see.

I think he has his eye on being the most boring possible 2024 candidate, so he’s gonna want to stay positively associated for Trump’s base.

However, since Trump is talking about a 2024 run, maybe that goes out the window.

They're up to 50 court cases decided... 49 in a loss. Still more pending.

We long crossed "pathetic" territory here...

So now I have learned that the state of Texas is suing four swing states, because, reasons.

And whoever runs the Twitter feed of the AZ Republican Party is bat shirt crazy.
