I would like some layman answers to the question "How does Trump have so much support, right now"? The final two word are important context.

I somewhat understand how he became a "force" prior to the 2016 election. There were many factors that allowed him to gain steam. Anti-establishment and not being a true politician was a big turn on to some voters on the right at the time. He talked a good game and somehow found a way to the Presidency despite acting "unpresidential". Trump's time in office had some victories for the Republicans and the economy was humming prior to COVID.....but the shirt show that happened on a daily basis with him firing executive staff (that didn't agree with him) and the overall chaos that was the White House certainly should've had an effect on his supporters. This was all BEFORE losing the 2020 election and what ensued. What happened after the 2020 election is well documented and, in my opinion, should have buried him as a candidate for office for eternity.

With ALL of what happened since the 2020 election, how can he still have half of the country (give or take) as supporters? Had all the election denying, countless gaffs, and the attempt to circumvent the Constitution had not occurred and had he regrouped and formed a strategy to compete in 2024, I could see a lot of his supporters continuing to follow him and his message. But I can't get how so many Americans can overlook what happened in front of their own eyes. I am truly bewildered.

I realize this is a mostly left leaning community, so maybe you folks do not have a clue either but would like to hear opinions. Especially, if you still support Trump through all of the mess.

Well they managed to do the right thing last time.
No Joe. That's completely false. There was no "they" Republicans who did the right thing while there was still a chance of Trump's attempted coup working. There was only one Republican who did the right thing while there was still a chance of Trump's attempted coup working. That one Republican was Pence and it was an atypical moment for him.

If you ask Republicans they don’t trust Dems anymore than the other way around.
How many Republicans have you actually asked?

Fascists don't trust non-fascists anymore than non-fascists trust fascists, obviously.

He won't wait. He won't risk losing the house and senate at midterm.
I'm trying to have a little optimism, but it is very plausible he makes a move then.

With Trump's health and lifestyle, he may not be alive for the midterms. I think Trump will die without warning from a catastrophic health crisis like heart failure, aneurysm, or stroke.

    No.

They didn't do the right thing.

If they would have done the right thing they would have convicted him after his impeachment and we wouldn't be in this shirt show.

They did the opposite of the right thing every minute of every day between the election and Biden’s inauguration except for one man on one day.

Good lord, the willful disregard for facts on display is gobsmacking.

People don't defy legal authority with they overthrow a government. They don't rely on or follow it. Bank robbers don't have "legal authority" to rob a bank do they?

Perhaps Joe can explain how the administration he really didn’t vote for has the “legal authority” to simply ignore court orders on a routine basis….the Denial river is starting to overflow its banks!!!!!

So the court needs to start holding people in contempt.

You folks seem to think that 1. Trump intends to seize power when the Constitution prohibits a third term And 2. That the rest of the country and all the government institutions will simply go along. It is a rather far out conspiracy theory but if it is what you believe there is nothing I can say to dissuade you. Think and believe as you please.

I simply don’t believe it. This country isn’t so easy to overthrow. It wasn’t built to be easily overthrown.

Just putting that out there. Feel free to proceed with your pearl clutching.

Trump has alluded to doing exactly what you say in point 1. Even if the guardrails hold and he fails, do you agree that committing such a brazen act harms the country?

Yes. It would harm the country.

Then that makes your second point, that it's a "far out conspiracy theory" to say that "the rest of the country and all the government institutions will simply go along," moot. You admit that through the mere act of trying, Trump would harm this country. We have evidence that Trump wants to try to illegally retain power. We have evidence that he tried in 2020 as well. Why is it suddenly a conspiracy theory?

It would harm the country if it happened. But I don’t believe it will happen. So there is that.

Lots of things have the potential to harm the country. Allowing millions of undocumented unvetted migrants for instance. Running a candidate for POTUS whom everyone knows is not capable of performing the job. I could go on.

It would be nice if our leaders would actually do what is best for the country or at the least do no harm.

Trump said he would do it. His surrogates have called for it to happen. He already tried it once. What about him makes you think now he will show restraint?

I also heard him say otherwise. I think he says it because it drives folks like you ape shirt. But hey, if that is what you believe then spent as much time as you want worrying about it. I’m not trying to convince you otherwise. I’m just saying I don’t see it as realistic and nor do I think if attempted it would succeed. Perhaps I have more confidence in our government institutions and the people than you.

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

You already agreed that it doesn't matter if it succeeds or not because it will damage the country either way.

It does matter if it doesn’t happen at all. Just because you are afraid it might happen doesn’t mean it will.

If you are so afraid it “might” happen, I would mitigate that risk by making sure I choose the very best candidate to run in 2028. I would choose a candidate that has broad appeal and choose a candidate that advances policies that have broad appeal.

Or you can dwell exclusively on those things you think “might” happen to the exclusion of everything else. That is up to you.

Actually, that’s not how this works.

If we truly believe this might happen, we don’t just need to vote for the best candidate. We already did that and it didn’t work.

No, actually what we have to do is convince people like you to also vote for the very best candidate in 2028. And even if we do convince you, it may already be too late. The time to keep Trump out was before he got power.

Unfortunately, it also looks like some of you are quite happy having a daddy, and the fingers in your ears are going to slide us right into authoritarianism along with you, no matter what we do.

He doesn't care - until it affect him or someone he loves - but by then "there will be no one to speak up for him"

"Why do you make me keep hitting you?"
