How were there not secret service snipers taking him out prior to him being able to get any shots off? It seems like there is no way he should have been able to get shots off.

The Secret Service doesn't have unlimited personnel, so they have to do the best they can with the manpower they have. I can only guess that the guy wasn't visible to the snipers until he got into position to shoot, and when he was visible they simply weren't looking at his specific location before he can start shooting.

What I find more puzzling is whey there were no Secret Service agents stationed at all on the roof the shooter used. Seems to make sense to at least put a guy or two up there considering the vantage point.

Yes, I see this point. What I have also seen is that every time someone on the Democratic side uses these comparisons it is a plea to vote. Every single time. I haven’t seen anybody in the Democratic Party suggest that violence might be necessary, only that if we don’t vote Trump out, we may not get another chance to vote.

Whereas Trump just flat out incites violence. He claims without any basis that elections are rigged and suggest people “fight like hell or you won’t have a country anymore”. Even yesterday, after being injured his words to the crowd were “fight, fight, fight” with a raised fist.

I have said this before, but I want the gloves off by Democrats. The GOP is invoking violence and they are demonizing entire classes of people. By gloves off what I mean is to no longer remain silent in the fact of their threats. Call them out, bring what they say out in the open and educate everyone about what they stand for. Don’t mealy mouth it - say what it is in plain language.

If we do that the American people will reject Trump. Nobody except religious fanatics truly wants what he is actually peddling.

I do understand the concerns over parallels in rhetoric.. it's bad. I just think that the situation and goals are different enough that.. things like literal attempted genocide by a Trump administration.. that's not where we're headed here and the Hitler parallel - unless it's nuanced out - always has that darkest part attached to it.

Ask the local PD if they can put a couple of their SWAT snipers up there."

I guess I don’t understand the point of all these objections to the real talk about what Trump wants to do. Do we have to make sure any serious discussion is never bastageized online before we can have that serious discussion?

Because that, to me, sounds like letting the lowest common denominator drive the narrative. There will always be idiots making bad faith arguments online.

The best way is just ignore them and carry on with the adult part of the discussion.

No, there are plenty of possible explanations. One that makes sense that I saw online is that he lost a bet, given the timing of the donation, which was on the day Biden was inaugurated.

Also - he never “switched” his party affiliation. He registered as a Republican when he turned 18.

Most likely because that area is in the 2nd layer of protection, which is normally coordinated with local police. And probably why there was a report of an LEO coming across the shooter before the shooter opened fire.

But yeah, they don't have unlimited personnel, and even with all of that protection, people sometimes can get through, although that's pretty rare.

Yeah, I actually did a quick search before I posted there to see if Hitler talked about genocide prior to taking power and it appears that he did not.. and so I do understand the parallel there.

It's just difficult to separate out the death camps from it when the parallels are to the path Hitler took to death camps, you know?

I would hope the outdoor venues will be eliminated now. Much more difficult to defend a candidate in one of these. And there have been numerous reports of people with medical emergencies because of the heat, and Trump’s habit of showing up at least an hour late.
