Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

You have excused his invasion. You say the US is to blame, which is relieving Putin of responsibility for his illegal and immoral invasion of a sovereign country.

Russia bears the legal and moral responsibility for invading Ukraine, but let's not act like the US hasn't been In a proxy war with Russia through Ukraine since at least 2014. The US was involved in the coup in Ukraine in 2014. Do you think that's normal?

LOL, thanks for making our point for us. Read what you wrote:

I bolded the word that begins where you start making excuses for Russia’s invasion. You even say Russian propaganda about the overthrow of the Putin puppet in Ukraine. Good grief.

It's like I was always told growing up, when you say 'but', everything before it gets thrown out the window. It's the same with apologies. If an apology has the word 'but' in it, it's not an apology.

Yeah we can't talk about the US's role in the 2014 coup and all the weapons we've been pumping into Ukraine since then. You all cry when you hear anything negative about the US.

Why not criticise both side like I did? Because you all have no idea how much war propaganda the corporate media puts out there.

Do you remember the NYTs role in pushing us to watch in Iraq?

    Excuses, excuses.

Sincerely, you're the only one here who seems to get even close to crying.

You seem to have no idea how much propaganda Russia puts out there and how much of it Russia floods onto the websites you rely on for what you call "information."

Do you remember the NYTs role in pushing us to watch in Iraq?
Cheney and Rumsfeld pushed that war and propaganda onto us. The NYT later admitted they were duped by the White House. The NYT shouldn't have fallen for it, but almost everyone in the world did.

Not me, though. I thought it was BS from the beginning and I was against invading Iraq from day one.

I'm also against military monuments in public spaces that are frequently visited by children. That's not the media doing that either.

I agree about the over militarization of our society. That doesn't apply to Ukraine. What we are currently doing to support Ukraine is morally right. I think we should be doing even more to help them drive Russia out. To decrease our help to Ukraine right now would be morally wrong.

Be forthright and honest, do you want the US to help Ukraine less in their efforts to drive Russia out?

You're getting pushback, because you seem to be arguing that the US should not be helping Ukraine to drive Russia out due to the US not being an innocent player in the past. Is that what you are arguing? If not, then please very clearly state what you are arguing?

Maybe you like your head in the sand.
If the choice is having my head in the sand or having it up were you seem to have yours, I'm choosing the sand every time and without hesitation.

Fortunately, I don't have to make that choice. My mind, eyes and heart are open and clear.

I mean we can go in depth on that stuff I guess but right or wrong within it I'm not sure it impacts how I feel about the current situation and what we should do.

It’s always a good idea to know who you are reading and what biases they hold. As usually the case, SFL is using extreme sources. In this case it’s a leftist extreme source. In my experience radical left sources tend to parrot a lot of Russian disinformation about Ukraine. Anyway, here is part of what MediaBiasFactCheck says about this site especially concerning the Russian invasion:

“Consortium News holds strong anti-war positions, which has resulted in media credibility rater Newsguard rating them with a Red Shield, indicating they are not credible. Newsguard cites the publication of false or misleading information regarding Ukraine. However, our review indicates that most information is factual and evidence-based. They are clearly biased, but the opinions presented are anchored in fact and perhaps exaggerated.”

Newsguard has flagged Consortium News for false or misleading information on Ukraine.

When I say extreme, I don’t mean just a little bit off-center either:
