Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

In news that probably only interest me, my home State of Yucatán finally gives a finger to the Catholic church and legalizes same sex marriage, 3rd time being the charm, with the State Court ruling this time the votes from the Representatives had to be made public.

It is unfortunate that this vote was likely heavily influenced by the killing 2weeks ago of a young man while in police custody (case ongoing), who may or may have not been gay, but was sodomized with an object. But if so, at least his death meant something.

So the state sanctioned gay marriage, not the Catholic Church, correct?

The Catholic Church cannot be coerced to accept homosexuality as official dogma.
Paradoxically, the Church has accepted gay priests for centuries as long as it is "don't ask, don't tell.
You meant to say that the church accepted pedophile priests for centuries, right? Pedophiles =\= gay people.

I did not say that. There is no relationship between pedophilia and homosexuality.
You need to check your tendency to use straw men.

The Church always had gay priests. In antiquity the Church was the only refuge for a gay man that lived in the closet. Imagine been gay in the 18th century.

I really get somewhat annoyed with the way religions want to push their beliefs into civil law. They are supposed to be separate, it’s one of the main reasons we have this country - for freedom from religious oppression by one sect onto others. I don’t understand why evangelicals and Catholics cannot distinguish between a religious ceremony of marriage and a civil ceremony. It’s not a hard concept, like at all. A child could make the distinction. The fact that they want to impose their religious beliefs as laws which apply to everyone makes them no different than any other extreme religious sect in the world. How is that different than sharia law?

In America people have the freedom to practice religion. Hence the religionists have the freedom to oppose same sex marriage.
I grew up Catholic and the church dogma is written in stone and over 2000 years old. As much as the church loves gay people they simply cannot change the origins and structure of the church. OTOH, the Episcopalians put the wet finger to the wind and change dogma regularly.

There are two church positions: The official 2000 year one and the "don't ask don't tell" one. BTW, there are Catholic churches where the a large component of the parishioners are gay and lesbian and they do not hide it. The priests just look the other way. This goes beyond :don't ask don't tell".

Reaffirming the belief system they have is not imposing their views on others. Why do you make that connection?
Who do you think you're trying to kid? The majority of Christians in the majority of polls on the subject believe that the US should make Christianity the country's official religion. Christians coming out and saying they want to impose their views on others is not the same as them just "reaffirming their belief system."

    Correct.

If you are confused by my comment: the Catholic church campaigned very, very hard and very. very publicly against it.
Gotcha, I was just wanting to clarify that a bishop or something didn't authorize it and I misunderstood your post.
Good for you state I guess, if that is what you guys voted for, then good on you.
