Juneteenth (June 19) to become federal holiday - starting tomorrow (1 Viewer)

Tucker made a fool of himself about it, if what I read is correct. The whole “this will ruin the July 4 holiday” angle. Such a whiny bastage.

Charlie Kirk (I think that’s his name) also tweeted out something along those lines.

They’re so predictable and transparent. It should embarrass grown men to behave this way.

Well, Tucker always makes a fool of himself. He's as bad, if not worse than Hannity. I stopped watching him a long time ago. I don't ever watch Fox after 5-6 pm. The evening lineup is terrible.

There has to be a negative psychological effect on people, especially children, to be constantly reminded that they are descendants of slaves. I think it would probably be better to do what Morgan Freeman said when he was asked how to get rid of racism - stop talking about it.

Everything is being made about race nowadays and we're going backwards.

    Get ready, this is coming

I expect it to be solemnly respectful the first couple years then it’ll be

“Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of the last slaves. You can celebrate freedom from back pain with a new sleep number bed”
    =============================
It is only a matter of time before a flood of Juneteenth trinkets, tchotchkes, doodads and gewgaws shows up on store shelves.

But let’s remember this: The enslaved people at the core of this new holiday were merchandise themselves before slavery finally came to an end.

As Juneteenth becomes a holiday that offers another excuse for parties, parades and prodigious capitalism, I am betting that a lot of Americans will fail to see that irony.

We all know what happens to holidays in America — the thing that we are actually supposed to commemorate somehow gets shoved aside in a whirlwind of sales, travel incentives and themed merch.

Memorial Day, for instance, is more about the unofficial start of summer than honoring those lost to war.

Labor Day closes out the season with nary a nod toward the labor movement or the workers who died in the Pullman Strike that led to that holiday’s creation in the first place.

Presidents’ Day is supposed to be a time for honoring past leaders but happens to fall at an opportune moment for automakers to roll out their discounts.

With its timing on the calendar, its pithy moniker and its roots in Black culture, Juneteenth is sure to be a marker for celebrations and a whole lot of barbecue. I’m down for that.

And enslaved people getting their freedom is cause for celebration, family-strong gatherings and line-dancing the wobble late into the night.

Let Miss Juneteenth wear her crown proudly. Bring on the Juneteenth-themed backyard banners, the strawberry soda and freedom-themed playing cards………

Thats not what Morgan Freeman said. That’s an Internet meme taken out of context. What he said was that there shouldn’t be a black history month because we should be talking about black history all the time.

The Internet really has broken America. Free speech + confirmation bias + the ability to mass distribute misinformation is a combination human nature just can’t combat.

This claim is utter nonsense. Please provide the evidence (proof) of this "negative psychological effect" that studying or examining slavery has this effect. And Junteenth is not about focusing on the degradation and inhumanity of chattel slavery, but freedom from bondage, which is uplifting, optimistic and a great story to tell.

The only "negative psychological effect" here is on fragile white egos (most likely like yours). HOW DARE TEH BLACKS CELEBRATE THEIR FREEDOM!!!!!!

    Utter garbage.

You're a new member here. Welcome aboard. You'd be well-served to do your due diligence before making a post like the one above. As it has already been pointed out, you are mistaken on what Morgan Freeman said.

Not talking about or simply ignoring a problem has never, in the history of human kind, been a solution to solving a problem. Racism will end when the people who treat people differently because of the color of their skin, stop treating people differently because of the color of their skin.

    You're right

Slavery and racism are barely taught in schools as it is, if we start we'll risk upsetting the race relations wonderland that we have today

    Oh wait....

The problem with that statement (all though not a true quote) is that not talking about something NEVER fixes the problem, it just makes things worse. ever Have a marriage issue? Try not talking about and see if it just goes away. Spoiler Alert: it doesn't...

If you take the small snippet from the Freeman interview, he also says I'll stop calling you a white man, and you stop calling me a black man. Sounds good right? A lot of people can't stop using the N word, must less that.
I bring this up all the time to family members and friends. They are talking about a co worker or someone they know in general. They will say something like: Bob, who is black, was outside and he slipped down and hurt his leg.
why did they mention he was black? it is completely irrelevant to the story. If Bob was white, they never would have mentioned it. When i bring that up they are just like, i dunno its just habit or some other lame reason. That doesn't mean they are racist, but that culture keeps the division open.

A menu that the manager of an Ikea store in Atlanta says was meant to honor Juneteenth instead angered Black employees who called it insensitive. Many didn't show up for work on Saturday – Juneteenth – and some even thought about quitting.

    The manager is apologizing.

Employees who requested anonymity due to fear of repercussions showed CBS Atlanta affiliate WGCL-TV an email sent Friday that said the special menu for customers and employees was one way to "honor the perseverance of Black Americans and acknowledge the progress yet to be made."

The menu included items such as fried chicken, watermelon, mac and cheese and collard greens.

Employees called that racially insensitive and ignorant and said members of management need to do more to educate themselves on black culture moving forward............

I am curious what would be an acceptable celebration meal for Juneteenth celebration, if any of our black posters care to respond. Just out of curiosity. As a Puerto Rican, I would expect that most meals celebrating our heritage would include things like arroz con gandules, penir, maduros y tostones, yuca, verduras etc. All are staples of Puerto Rican cooking.

I know that fried chicken, watermelon collard greens are all frought with racial overtones, but fried chicken and collard greens are also staples of soul food (if I'm not mistaken). So what would a more appropriate menu look like?

I think the intent was a postive one, but why wouldn't they include the voices of their own black employees before finalizing the menu? That just seems so stupid.

    So it went like this?:
A couple white guys talking about what should be on the menu. One says, ooh, Fried Chicken and WaterMelon! then the other guy says, i think they like collard greens too.
And no one thought, hey lets run this across a couple of our workers and see what they think.

I get this. I do. However, IMO, the celebration for Juneteenth shouldn't just be geared toward the black population. It should be celebrated by ALL Americans. It's a celebration of the complete abolishment of slavery and the freeing of all people in the US. BBQ, potato salad, hotdogs, hamburgers, mac and cheese, baked beans, jambalaya, green beans, grilled corn, etc. should be on the menu. The fact that it seems like they targeted the most stereotyped food items for the menu just shows that some people only see Juneteenth as a "black" holiday rather than a holiday that every American should celebrate.

i just wanted to quote you because I couldn’t come close to the clarity and tone and it needs to be said over and over

We should have a holiday on April 9 to celebrate the end of the civil war. I would support moving independence day from July 4 to April 9.

Thanks for the response. I absolutely agree with everything you posted, especially the bolded part. Juneteenth is absolutely a celebration of Freedom that should be celebrated by all in our country. But it also feels like we should take the opportunity to celebrate and elevate Black culture, and food is always going to be an important part of our culture, whatever it is. Given that Juneteenth sprung from remembrance and celebration in black communities, I think it's only natural to ask what types of foods have typically been prepared for this celebration and want to include some of that in our more multi-cultural celebrations today. If that's, BBQ, potato salad and hotdogs, then that's great, but I'm just wondering if there are other traditional dishes that have been historically prepared for this celebration in black communities.

Also, I think IKEA could have celebrated and elevated black culture by maybe contracting with a black owned catering service for the celebration and getting input from their employees on the menu. Inclusion is always the best remedy of stereotypical approaches to celebrations.

My fairly obvious thought as well....

Let me just say that until a few years ago, I had only ever heard of Juneteenth as a "thing". I didn't learn about the Tulsa Massacre until I was in college and didn't learn about the Juneteenth story and celebration until much later when a cousin from Houston told me about it. I thought it was a Texas thing. And I'll tell you that I've unlearned many things that I was taught coming up such as Malcolm X being someone who I should be ashamed of. Many of my relatives have taken to celebrating Juneteenth rather than the 4th of July.

Juneteenth is that one holiday where Americans can celebrate both freedom from slavery and the embarrassment of slavery itself at the same time.

I dunno, I still love me some fired chicken. :hihi:
