I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

This was before I realized there are basically three different heads of Capitol security, but the idea is the same. optics over safety. We need a full accounting of what happened.

This is something I posted on my Facebook today. I would add, this is probably something to seriously consider; how to prevent this in the future and how to better respond to an attack.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

The more I think about the Capitol security situation last week, the more I am bothered by it. I'm going to ignore the political side of it as much as possible.

The capitol police showed less force than they typically do for any protest. They often enforce checkpoints where you can't bring bags, poles, etc. They did not.

The outgoing house sergeant of arms stated he didn't want bad optics of calling in the guard ahead of time (like they often do). When a call for help was finally given, it took almost an hour and a half for the DoD to respond. I dont know if that's typical (and the reason you'd want them prestaged and pre authorized). That isnt acceptable.

About 8 years ago, one of our diplomatic compounds in Benghazi had a protest then an attack. Lives were lost. Multiple congressional hearings occurred about the lack of government response, how slow the military arrived, and conflicting reports on when help was requested vs pre staged. This was a compound in a foreign country with limited security and additional forces were hundreds of miles away.

How can anyone think that an attack on our Capitol is acceptable? How can anyone think that the amount of pre deployed law enforcement was acceptable? Heck, according to info I've seen, the March for science with Bill Nye had more security. Then, even after that, how can anyone think our response time, when the capitol was being breached was acceptable?
Are we seriously wanting our congress (who I often find derelict in their duty), to work under the constant threat of violence? Is it that easy to storm the capitol? This is pathetically unAmerican. Mob rule and the threat of tyranny is the antithesis of what we are. Or better yet, of what we strive to be.

I don't know if there needs to be a congressional version of the secret service, but there needs to be a LOT less red tape when it comes to the security of our president, lawmakers, and Supreme Court Justices. I.e. the FBI shouldn't wait for an invitation in this case.

Now the conspiracy theorists are reporting issues with right wing affiliated websites. They are being censored across all platforms.
