This will all but end the Republicans chance to keep the White House and Senate, but they'll win the long game.

Perhaps. I just think Mitch is a no-holds barred kind of power player. But Trump and the White House will probably screw up the nomination and take too long or put some bozo up. That part has been pretty reliable.
    You know, seems plausible.

I imagine Tillis will publicly say he wants a vote, do you think he really does?

My rather limited knowledge opinion: They will not try. Too many incumbent Republican Senators are in tight battles and will express their desire not to see this fight come up and may even tell Mitch they want to be out in front with the opinion that the vote should occur after the new Senate convenes.

This post gave me some hope for a brief moment, but Mitch had the announcement all ready to go didn’t he? He couldn’t even wait and make a second announcement, he had to put it right in his “condolence” announcement.

Looking back, this is why Trump suddenly randomly tweeted about who he would name the other day, he couldn’t even wait until she actually passed.

It will be particularly interesting if the Republicans don't get someone seated before the election and Trump loses. That will take all the "justification" out of Mitch's sails. Though it still probably won't matter.

You know, if the Administration was smart, they would nominate the least controversial conservative possible and the Senate would cruise to a confirmation, his third judge. Alas, I think you're right and Trump will nominate *Roy Moore and all hell will break loose.

*No I don't seriously think he will nominate Roy Moore but, be honest, if you woke up to Twitter Armageddon that he has, would you really be surprised?

Btw, it’s possible that if there is no replacement, the Court could be sitting with 8 justices and hear election challenges. 4-4 is possible.

That would just mean the lower court ruling stays - but that’s not necessarily a federal circuit court, it is more likely a state high court ruling. Elections are state court matters, though I suppose some scenarios could be in federal court.

But Bush v. Gore was cert from Fla. Supreme Court.

Well, crap, the guy I saw tweeting it got it from a former Utah state Rep, so I thought it was real. I do have hope that Romney will decide that way. He has integrity.

    Hopefully that changes.

Trump should realize that making the election about the Supreme Court is the best shot he has. He doesn’t need the election to be about covid or civil rights.

It is also better for the country to wait and let the results of the election decide who makes the nomination.

It has been rare that Trump’s and the country’s interest align this well.

Claire McCaskill with some soothing words:

Also saw Trump’s reaction on leaving his rally, and surprisingly it was much classier than Mitch, who is an absolute ghoul.

which is quite the statement from someone who actually knows about the history of this country

I hate talking about this so soon after she has passed but, frankly, it is the reality of the times we live in. "Everything political..." right?

Let's be clear. Mitch has no principles. He will have confirmation hearings as soon as someone is nominated. That's happening. And any hope of the election changing that is false hope imo.

Even if he loses the election, decidedly, Trump is still President until January 20, 2021. Even if the D's flip the Senate, the new Senate isn't inaugurated until January 3rd, 2021. Does anyone here honestly believe that this Republican executive branch and this Republican Senate won't get someone nominated and confirmed by January?

I joked about Roy Moore in my last post but they would literally have to nominate Roy Moore to screw it up that bad. I will happily eat crow if I am wrong but I have zero faith in the principles of anyone in the Republican party to pass on this. Most of them have endured Trump's Presidency FOR THIS.

And yes, GMR, we are facing a winter of possible/probable increasing Covid infections, heightened racial and civic tensions, one of the most divisive national elections in memory, with a Supreme Court seat in the balance with a populace facing the possibility of having to socially distance and have Zoom holidays. shirt is about to get real and shirt is about to get ugly.

shirt, the way 2020 is going, we are going to have a Patriots-Cowboys Super Bowl to top it off and the country will just spontaneously combust.
