My question is in the OP Title.
Here is what caused me to wonder about this topic...

My OP title has the wrong spelling for the country in question.
    I used an extra "L"
The proper spelling is " Philippines "
    Sorry for my error.

    Why don't ou ask Filipinos?
#1 If there were any on this thread I'd happily ask them.
#2 The article itself says that the majority of them are in favor. I think it was 71% but I have to get ready to go to church so I'm not gonna open the link up again at the moment.

This is all about weakening Chinese influence in the South China sea.

So what it's really being asked, "Should America take steps to help defend SE Asian countries from a belligerent China?"

This is the kind of tomfoolery going on in the region.

I am aware that the Philippines are feeling insecure re. China. I think it might be a good idea if we had a military base there to deter Chinese aggression.
Do you ( and other people on this thread) feel that way as well or not?

This.. If they feel insecure they might feel better if there was an increased military presence there, but politically it would be smarter if it was an international task force and not just an american. The signal value is greater if many nations stands together - preferable all nations which borders the pacific ocean.

Great idea if this was a war or a military occupation. Yet the idea is much smaller than that...it's for one specific naval base. I don't think that one specific naval base would function well with a multi nation presence.

America imports tons of good from Vietnam, Japan, and Korea. There really is no imperial slant with this one. It's essentially a replay of the cold war when we had even more bases in Europe.

There is a decent chance all this won't be needed. Maybe, China implodes from demographic collapse, and corruption.
