This is truly fascinating to watch - and I think it shows just how troubled US politics are right now.

You have the incumbent mayor Eric Adams - running for re-election as an independent - who was literally indicted for defrauding the City and its taxpayers, but managed to have the charges dropped after cozying up to Donald Trump. Amazingly, Adams has the support of billionaire Bill Ackman and others.

Then you have Andrew Cuomo, who had to resign as the Governor of New York based on widespread sexual misconduct allegations and a growing impeachment investigation. Cuomo tried to win the democratic primary but lost and announced his candidacy as an independent. He recently said "If I lose, I'm moving to Florida" - which is quite a statement from someone trying to win a position where everyone believes that you must love the city, as a baseline quality.

Both Adams and Cuomo are behind in the polls to Zohran Mamdani, the foreign-born (naturalized citizen) who serves in the New York state house and won the Democratic primary on an energetic campaign on issues such as rent controls and affordable housing, transportation costs, grocery costs, and other issues that appeal to the lower and middle income demographics, as well as the young. But critics accuse his plans of free buses, public-supported childcare, and rent controls as socialistic.

So here you have Mamdani, the only candidate with a genuine platform of issues and solutions that draws on a groundswell of support and enthusiasm, being blasted by both the Republican/MAGA establishment as socialist, and the old democratic establishment and their wealthy financial backers because he's an outsider and presents a threat to their control. Trump has even threatened to de-naturalize and deport him - which is an absolutely psychotic reaction.

But Mamdani is leading the polls, most likely because (a) he isn't a known corrupt individual and (b) is bringing a batch of ideas that the people believe will help in key areas where they believe something needs to change. If he continues to lead at the election draws near, the attacks and vitriol are going grow . . . but I think you have to be very critical in looking at who these voices are and why they are saying what they're saying.

    And it's very revealing.

I think most if not all billionaires should be taxed until they are under a billion net worth. I’m serious. I never thought that way until the last decade but these people are seriously affected mentally by that much money and power and it has impaired them.

WASHINGTON — Immediately after Zohran Mamdani became the presumptive Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City last month, one Republican congressman had a provocative suggestion for the Trump administration: “He needs to be DEPORTED.”

The Uganda-born Mamdani obtained U.S. citizenship in 2018 after moving to the United States with his parents as a child. But Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., argued in his post on X that the Justice Department should consider revoking it over rap lyrics that, he said, suggested support for Hamas.

The Justice Department declined to comment on whether it has replied to Ogles’ letter, but White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said of his claims about Mamdani, “Surely if they are true, it’s something that should be investigated.”

Trump himself has claimed without evidence that Mamdani is an illegal immigrant, and when erstwhile ally Elon Musk was asked about deporting another naturalized citizen, he suggested he would consider it.

The congressman’s proposal dovetails with a priority of the Trump administration to ramp up efforts to strip citizenship from other naturalized Americans. The process, known as denaturalization, has been used by previous administrations to remove terrorists and, decades ago, Nazis and communists.

But the Trump DOJ’s announcement last month that it would “prioritize and maximally pursue denaturalization proceedings” has sparked alarm among immigration lawyers and advocates, who fear the Trump administration could use denaturalization to target political opponents.

Although past administrations have periodically pursued denaturalization cases, it is an area ripe for abuse, according to Elizabeth Taufa, a lawyer at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center..............

Trump and is ilk are poison. They are incompatible with a democratic system. He/they are in blatant fascist, power grab mode now. They will continue to act this way until we rise up and slap them down.

Dude should've called the movers after the election instead of opting to run an Independent campaign!

    NYC don't want you, bro!

Just to make sure everyone understands what the voters were doing. It was a ranked choice ballot in which everyone ranked their candidates in order of preference.

The 2nd rank and 3rd rank votes determine the winner of the election much more often than the 1st ranked votes. By not ranking Cuomo at all, voters were very loudly saying they didn't won't Cuomo at all under any circumstances.

I sure hope this is true. The general election polls I have seen have them tied. I’m hoping the polls are wrong and Mamdani will prevail. He deserves a shot at running the city.

If I'm not mistaken, Mamdani outperformed the primary polls by quite a bit. Every candidate is going to attack Mamdani and they will have billionaires funding them to do it. Hopefully, Mamdani wins anyhow, maybe even because of it.

Ranked voting is a must for national elections…
