The republicans have to go, they can no longer exist in a democracy and they know it, so they have decided to absolutely do anything to stay in power , including bringing down our government, installing a dictator ,taking away votes of Americans and allow courts to overturn elections without a reason, just because they lose. 300 anti American bills across the country to take away the votes of Democrat by this [Mod Edit :nono: Partisan Triggering term].

Honestly, j, you seem a bit too hostile.

I am concerned about the direction the extreme right is going, they do desire autocracy or theocracy and would gladly relegate entire groups to be second class citizens.

However, they don’t represent a majority in this country. The really radical ones are actually a fairly tiny minority.

I think there’s a segment of the media who are just fanning the flames for clicks. This happens on extreme sites from the left and the right. We already have had numerous members from the more conservative side pushing the panic button about “socialism”, BLM, and antifa. They think numerous cities were burned down last summer, that Portland is in ruins, lol.

I’m getting a similar vibe from you, but from the left.

I think extreme panic, as discussed in the thread, actually does more harm than good. Violent rhetoric isn’t a good idea no matter who is pushing it.

The right wing of the republican party is running the house and senate and a plethora of state houses and legislatures.

To pretend as you post above does, that it's a "tiny minority" is wishful thinking and dangerous.

I think the hard core right wing of the party is a minority of the party. The problem we have is there are a lot lifelong Republicans who think they don't really have a choice. Those people don't particularly care for Trump, but they vote for him anyway because of their complete refusal to vote for who they see as a bigger enemy. Those Republicans are party lifers. There are quite a few of them.

The tribalism approach is still effective, and why Republicans are still winning enough elections to stay somewhat relevant.

So, how do you distinguish the non-hardcore right wing Republicans, when they go along with what this "minority" says?

"I don't care about shooting that man... but here's a bullet."

Not my job to make that distinction. But there are all kinds, and more than a few aren't crazy about Trump, but vote R because that's what they've always done. It is what it is.

System, there may be some truth in what you say about enabling the crazy, but:

We need to provide a landing space for these people. We need to gently usher them away from the edge. They’re not bad people, not really. They just have been scared silly by listening to the propaganda of the crazy wing of the R party. They read and hear that the democrats are all socialists or communists. They read or hear that BLM is Marxist, out to destroy America. They read and hear that antifa is burning down cities all over America. That the Democrats somehow pulled off a multi-state massive conspiracy to fraudulently put Biden in the White House.

They may not totally believe these lies, but they have enough doubt that they convince themselves they have to support the truly radical elements. They must do it just in case there’s any truth there.

Telling them they are just as bad as the worst that is out there will probably backfire. It will make them think that there is no safe alternative for them. That they have to stick with their tribe, because there’s no other place for them.

Sorry for the long-winded reply and it’s not really directed at you, necessarily. Just what’s been rattling around in my brain this morning.

Yet, you tried to make it.

    And you tried again.

When you enable the behavior, you are as guilty.
I'm just stating what I've observed. It’s obvious, but if you want to deny that, that's your prerogative.

Never said anything about enabling their behavior. Just saying they're out there. What to do about them is a different debate and I don't really have a good answer for that. MT15 gave a better answer than me, so, yeah.

But they don't seem to want a landing space, do they?

It doesn't matter how they rationalized their support for truly radical elements, but that they are supporting it. "I am not a radical, I just support what radicals do"... well, guess what?

Well, it's not even that. They simply don't support anyone with a D next to their name. I suppose they could vote 3rd party, but that's sort of pointless until we get ranked choice voting.

Actually, no, it is no simply that they don't support anyone with a D next to their name, it is that they don't support anyone with a D next to their name AND support everyone with an R next to their name. And yes, even if someone doesn't like Trump but then voted for him, guess what? That is support. They could vote 3rd party or they could not vote; but they continue to vote R and enabling the behavior.

And no, in this case, it is not pointless to vote 3rd party or not vote. It'd show the GOP that their behavior is not OK. But as long as that vote is cast for that R again, guess what?

    Point taken. Fair enough.

    That's not what was said.
And yet, you don't believe some of what that poster said didnt sound a bit alarmist, worded deliberately to sound confrontational and to pick a forking verbal Internet screaming match or finger-pointing?

His response to me, was unique, to say the least, when I told him in his "Bring the House down on Joe Manchin" thread that Dems might want to think long and hard about the implications and potential consequences of how eliminating the filibuster will seriously backfire if GOP regains control of House or Senate and they arrive locked and loaded to defund Planned Parenthood clinics in all states, major cities, drastically scale back federal funds for "sanctuary cities" for illegal, migrant workers or immigrants and their families. McConnell has already gone on the record stating his party's intentions to do these very things. All I got was some barely-discernable partisan rant that was badly worded and phrased that didnt make any sense.
