I've heard that clip several times and for the first time I think I understand why Vance thinks that way. I think he hasn't emotionally healed from the rough childhood he had, so he hasn't been able to accept, let go and move on.

I think he's emotionally stuck in his childhood and telling himself if he had a mommy and daddy everything would be okay. He doesn't realize how destructive and painful a two parent home can be, because he can't see past his own childhood that he's still stuck in. He wants everyone to have what he thinks he very badly needed. It's a form of misguided empathy that gets twisted into oppression.

It doesn't excuse him of accountability for his words and actions. Any hurt we suffered as children does not justify us hurting others as adults. Vance is fully accountable for his words and actions. I think if he were to heal from his childhood, he'd be a less hurtful and authoritarian person. He might not be a lost cause like Trump is.
