Trump leadership team accidentally invites Atlantic editor to highly classified Signal war-planning channel (1 Viewer)

This needs a thread of its own - we can pull the posts out of Misc Trump. This story is (1) absolutely mindblowing and (2) not mindblowing at all because Trump has never really understood the value of high-caliber professionals and has surrounded himself with dramatically unqualified dolts.

I accepted the connection request, hoping that this was the actual national security adviser, and that he wanted to chat about Ukraine, or Iran, or some other important matter.

Two days later—Thursday—at 4:28 p.m., I received a notice that I was to be included in a Signal chat group. It was called the “Houthi PC small group.”

A message to the group, from “Michael Waltz,” read as follows: “Team – establishing a principles [sic] group for coordination on Houthis, particularly for over the next 72 hours. My deputy Alex Wong is pulling together a tiger team at deputies/agency Chief of Staff level following up from the meeting in the Sit Room this morning for action items and will be sending that out later this evening.”

The message continued, “Pls provide the best staff POC from your team for us to coordinate with over the next couple days and over the weekend. Thx.”

The term principals committee generally refers to a group of the senior-most national-security officials, including the secretaries of defense, state, and the treasury, as well as the director of the CIA. It should go without saying—but I’ll say it anyway—that I have never been invited to a White House principals-committee meeting, and that, in my many years of reporting on national-security matters, I had never heard of one being convened over a commercial messaging app.

One minute later, a person identified only as “MAR”—the secretary of state is Marco Antonio Rubio—wrote, “Mike Needham for State,” apparently designating the current counselor of the State Department as his representative. At that same moment, a Signal user identified as “JD Vance” wrote, “Andy baker for VP.” One minute after that, “TG” (presumably Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, or someone masquerading as her) wrote, “Joe Kent for DNI.” Nine minutes later, “Scott B”—apparently Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, or someone spoofing his identity, wrote, “Dan Katz for Treasury.” At 4:53 p.m., a user called “Pete Hegseth” wrote, “Dan Caldwell for DoD.” And at 6:34 p.m., “Brian” wrote “Brian McCormack for NSC.” One more person responded: “John Ratcliffe” wrote at 5:24 p.m. with the name of a CIA official to be included in the group. I am not publishing that name, because that person is an active intelligence officer.

The principals had apparently assembled. In all, 18 individuals were listed as members of this group, including various National Security Council officials; Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East and Ukraine negotiator; Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff; and someone identified only as “S M,” which I took to stand for Stephen Miller. I appeared on my own screen only as “JG.”

That was the end of the Thursday text chain.

[…] and reading Atlantic literally makes you smarter.

    Well we’ll see…😂

I’d been hesitant because I wasn’t sure if I’d make the time to fit it in with my routine and existing media consumption, but that reservation is gone. And honestly, if I never read an article, I’m happy to be able to add my small show of support for an organization demonstrating this level of commitment to upholding high journalistic standards, at a time when so many others are finding it easier not to.

Republican Senators finally saying this looks serious….

I only saw Lisa Murkowski listed in the article. I don’t think she will be a Republican for much longer. She’s almost always one of the few reasonable Republicans. Are there any others speaking out?

More are listed here…hopefully the Democrats keep the fire lit on investigating this and don’t let it slip into the Trump abyss of nonsense.

Adding to the list of their incompetence, both Ratcliffe and Gabbard are on the Congressional record stating that Signal is a Government approved App for transmitting official information. I would love to see the documentation backing up that claim.

What's great about Atlantic is that it's just different - they cover most of the current issues and developments but it's not a news outlet. It's an analysis and thoughtfulness outlet. The articles are usually quite long - and both well researched and extremely well written. The prose at the Atlantic is several grades higher than the typical articles elsewhere.

This Signal story though - it just fell into their lap. It's really amazing.

We'll see if they can backup whether it is authorized for official information, but it is definitely NOT authorized for SECRET information. Rep Crowe just read the NSA classification guide that states that imminent bombings is Top Secret or above. Furthermore, it is totally irresponsible. This could've led to catastrophic shoot-downs of our aircraft.

Fox News presenter Jesse Watters floated a conspiracy theory that Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg "catfished" the nation's top military officials and tricked his way into a now-infamous group chat coordinating an attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Watters downplayed the security breach on his Tuesday show, likening it to a normal citizen accidentally adding someone to a group chat instead of top military officials adding a journalist to sensitive war plans.

Trump and his officials have been scrambling to save face, with Trump downplaying the embarrassing incident as "something that happens" and branding the Atlantic a "failing magazine.”

On Wednesday, a full copy of the exchange was released by the Atlantic as the White House tried to paint the embarrassing breach as a “coordinated media campaign.”

National Security Adviser Mike Waltzsuggested on Tuesday to Fox News' Laura Ingraham that Goldberg may have sent him contact information using someone else's name, which duped him into adding him to the group chat.

“Have you ever had somebody’s contact that shows their name, and then you have somebody else’s number there?” Waltz asked.

Ingraham sarcastically said she'd never make such a mistake.

“Right? You’ve got somebody else’s number on someone else’s contact. So, of course, I didn’t see this loser [Goldberg] in the group. It looked like someone else,” Waltz said. “Now, whether he did it deliberately, or it happened in some other technical means, is something we’re trying to figure out.”……….

I can’t imagine watching Fox News, listening to this insane deflection from getting to the truth of the matter, and not having my brain turn to mush. Wow

It is not authorized period. They might as well been using facebook.

The records of these (the signal scandal) and other apps that Trump officials have and are using…where are they stored?! Setting the conversations to delete would be a big no-no. Hopefully this lawsuit gets traction and we the American people get some answers.

They are using these 3rd party Apps for the explicit purpose of avoiding their actions being preserved in the the National Archives, just like Project 2025 instructed.

If they want to avoid the proper legal upkeep of their communications…heads should roll.
