Trump directs DOJ and DHS to get tough with law firms (1 Viewer)

The wild irony here is that no one has filed or had filed on his behalf more frivolous or meritless court paper than Donald Trump.

As a matter of history, no free and just society ever takes down the judges and the lawyers. It’s 100% a symptom of authoritarian darkness.

I read today that the DC law firm he threatened with pulling their clearances has caved, much like Columbia is caving.

It’s hard to feel like we have any integrity left in America at this point. Regular people have zero chance if white shoe law firms and huge universities are just giving up.

Media has been a favorite target of his for over a decade and now he will attempt to shut down NBC & CNN.

He did that to two firms so far, Perkins Coie is fighting it - but Paul Weiss surrendered and gave Trump $40 million. They also got ridden over when Trump announced the terms of the “settlement” where they basically agreed that suing Trump is unacceptable conduct. The legal community is pretty shaken and embarrassed.

I'm not of the legal world and this scares me. These are the lieutenants defending the rule of law. My stage of grief for the rule of law and faith in Americans has been bouncing between anger and depression since the election. This and columbia pushed it too full blown depression.

If someone isn't familiar with the moscow bombings that propelled putin to power, here's the full story.

When the truth that fsb was behind the bombings, investigators and prosecutors were systematically eliminated.

Russian human-rights defenders Sergei Yushenkov, Yuri Shchekochikhin, Anna Politkovskaya, and Alexander Litvinenko also worked to shed light on the apartment bombings. But all of them were murdered between 2003 and 2006. By 2007, when I testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the bombings, I was the only person publicly accusing the regime of responsibility who had not been killed.

In another occasion involving corruption in the putin's regime, see if this is familiar. Magnitsky, tasked with exposing corruption, was himself in turn accused of corruption after he uncovered evidence.

How can a law firm, supposedly staffed by intelligent people, not know he cannot be trusted? How can any adults not know how you never cave to a bully, you have to stand up to a bully? The bully never respects anyone who bends the knee. The only people the bully ever gives any grudging respect to are the ones who stand up to him.

    Thanks, Sendai, that was helpful.

It’s shameful and unconstitutional behavior from Trump and should be an impeachable act, IMO. Also shameful that Weiss felt the need to try to appease him, you don’t try to appease a dictator, it only emboldens them. It doesn’t matter that Weiss may not have made all the concessions Trump says they did, he is saying it and they haven’t come forward to set the record straight.

Unbelievable cowardice from people of wealth and privilege. How will ordinary people fare?

Another example and omen of what may be to come. In turkey, erdogan's son, Bilal, was on audio and video in a money laundering case. The prosecutor was demoted and the reporters who reported were arrested and jailed.

Meanwhile, journalists exposing corruption or government-related investigations often face jail time and persecution. Reuter's report about the alleged corruption scheme mentioning President Erdoğan's family member is not the first to mention the president's son in a graft story. Bilal Erdoğan's name previously appeared in a graft scandal in 2016. At the time, his name was associated with a money-laundering probe in Italy. The accusations leveled against Bilal were eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence. In 2014, a series of leaked audio recordings between Bilal and his father, discussing how to dispose of tens of millions of foreign currency cash, were also dismissed as fake. The foundations where Bilal Erdoğan is a board member have also been in the spotlight of investigative journalists.

    Mob boss gonna extort.
And intimidate via fear to get anyone who dares oppose to bend the knees. Fundamentally I see this as neutering any and all opposition.

Putin, gathered his oligarchs, who thought they were the real power brokers after helping him get elected. He told them that he had the regulatory power to investigate any of them. A few defied. So the hammer fell down on them. A parody mocking putin? Nah huh. These oligarchs eventually were forced to sell their assets and fled. Many died in Europe through very unusual circumstances. One died in Spain to what was suppose to be a murder suicide of his family.

Thus is born the new form of autocracy.

Any law firm giving in to these ridiculous attacks by appeasing Trump just needs to end their practice. They aren't worth shirt.

At least we get to see who all the appeasers are (in both business and government).

Also, Democrats definitely need to go after outfits like America First Legal, the Federalist Society and Fox News when they get back in power. No Mercy!
