The elite are ruining the country

The elite are completely out of touch

The elite don’t understand what life is like for regular Americans

    But who are the elite?

I can’t remember if I saw or read it but basically said “the Elite” are favorite boogeymen for both parties

When the left talks about the elite they are talking about rich people

When the right talk about the elite they are talking about educated or ‘cultured’ people

I thought it was an interesting point

And for both the elite is a small group of people who not only don’t understand your life they are about to come up with a bunch of laws that favor people like them

What does “The Elite” mean to you?

    ==========================

Louisiana Republican Sen John Kennedy made a memorable contribution to a Trump rally in his state on November 14, casting himself as a “proud deplorable” in contrast to the “goat’s milk latte-drinking, avocado toast-eating insider’s elite.”........

    =====================
.........While Ross, who was worth $2.9 billion in 2016, might have a hard time understanding the economic plight of working Americans, the reality is that 40 percent of Americans can’t cover a $400 emergency expense and 25 percent have no retirement savings whatsoever.......

    Guess I’ll put these here

I'll give a better answer later, but that while quote was aimed at urban / suburban / younger folks, vs rural / older folks. Nothing to do with actual elite. Just a way to tell GOP voters that Democrats think they are better than you.

That is the “actual elite” for the GOP (or at least that’s what they tell their supporters)

    The cultural/educated/social/politically correct elite

When I personally hear elite I think super rich people

I think New Yorkers, particularly cut-throat real estate tycoons who decorate everything in marble and gold leaf and marry super models for fun. :9:

What’s the old saying about pornography? “I’m not sure how to define it, but i know it when i see it”.. or something to that effect.

Whenever i hear the term ‘Elitist’ used in a derogatory manner , it always reminds me of the rant Bill Maher went on a few years back where he said (i’m Paraphrasing): “I always hear about ‘Elite’ this or ‘Elite’ that- I dont know about you, but when it comes to electing someone to run the country, I WANT someone who is elite.. i want someone who is BETTER than me, who is SMARTER than me.. Why? because it’s a big ******* job, and i know *I* personally wouldn’t be capable of doing it, nor would i ever want that job.. So yeah, let’s please elect someone who is elite.”

That pretty much sums it up for me as well.

I know that the super rich elite has been a thing forever

But when did the educated elite start?

It feels like it’s not nearly as long

I think leftists tend to wish that is the way they are thought of by the right. In reality, I think the "educated" that the right look down upon are those people who received degrees that from fields that are dominated bought by postmodern influence.

I've been under the impression that those, like yourself, who make that argument, are speaking about all universities in general and most degrees.

So, which degrees get a pass?

Was surprised to learn that lobster used to be considered ‘poor people’s food’

One guy was made fun of at school because he brought lobster for lunch almost every day

Not sure when or how it changed
I hasn't changed. It is still "poor people food" where lobster is readily available.

    Scarcity and demand determine price.

Oxtail, beef tongue and other organ meats were dirt cheap for decades but the recent interest in such things has driven the prices very high where I live.

    True

I swear oxtail is three times what it was a few years ago

Are you talking Maine with the lobsters?

I do wonder how “poor people” food becomes “rich people” food

Is it people who grew up poor became rich but still had a hankering for the food they ate as a child?

Or people who grew up poor became chefs in high end restaurants and started making fancy dishes using the ingredients they grew up with and the rich clientele fell in love with them

    Or something else entirely?

I went to the coast of Maine a couple years ago. Couldn't find lobster under $12(or maybe $16 - recollection is fuzzy) per pound. Never was too interested, lacks flavor vs crawfish :p

Mr. Burns from The Simpsons comes to mind as a good caricature.

"Old money" people who use that money to push things in their favor, regardless of consequence to anyone else.

    That's not really accurate.

Mr. Burns is a corporatist. His only care is profit so he would only be called "elite" by the current left. To the right, Mr. Burns is a hero who provides jobs and who deserves to pay less in taxes than those of us in the top of the middle class.

To the right, the elite is an educated upper-middle class person or a rich liberal or other who vote for Democrats. The current "conservative" sees anyone who doesn't believe in the Christian fundamentalist strain of religion as an elite to be loathed and feared.

The Mr. Burnses have corrupted the modern Republican party by allying their needs with those who fight liberals who they refer to as "the elite" In so doing, Burns has convinced his fellow Republicans to vote against their own self interests economically, socially and morally. He has tricked them into believing that his great wealth is a form of virtue to be celebrated and revered rather than as simply an accumulation of assets.

It's like that old HG Wells book with the Eloi. The folks who live in the dark below ground allow the little Eloi to live and do their thing so they can be eaten and used like livestock the same as Burns uses his fundamentalist, Christian / Republican assets.
