This probably needs its own thread. It ties in with a lot of different R culture wars: Attacks on universities, attacks on CRT and “woke”. Classifying teachers and librarians as “groomers”. Pushing vouchers to send tax money to private, often religious, schools. Betsy DeVos was an advocate for all these policies that will weaken public education, and there are several billionaires who also want to dismantle public education. Public education may have its faults, but it is responsible for an amazing amount of upward mobility. Kids from poor areas can still get a college prep education in a public school.

Vouchers (sometimes disguised as “school choice”) are a particular peeve of mine. Public money is diverted from poor schools to wealthy private schools, which aren’t required to offer accommodations for special needs or challenged students. Families with special needs kids are left out. Rural areas often suffer disproportionately because there are no private schools to attend, but their public schools still see the reduction in funding. Often the families who take advantage of the voucher money are upper class and the private schools simply raise tuition knowing the families are getting taxpayer money now.

Greg Abbot is being particularly vile in this area. No surprise. Voters will have to make a statement about public education. If we want to halt the growing divide in this country between the “haves” and “have-nots”, we need to pay attention to public education.

I also noticed that he never mentioned civil rights enforcement which is a very important function of the Dept of Education. Historically important.

The Trump administration is considering attempting to stop some colleges from having any foreign students if it believes that too many of them are supportive of Hamas, according to Axios.

The endeavor is yet another attempt by the White House to take aggressive action on immigration and campus antisemitism, in what some view as an effort that suppresses free speech in colleges……

“Every institution that has foreign students...will go through some sort of review,” an official told Axios. “You can have so many bad apples in one place that it leads to decertification of the school...I don't think we're at that point yet. But it is not an empty threat.”……..

Oh the irony "not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history."
Trump executive order seeks to 'restore' American history through Smithsonian overhaul
Titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History," the order states, "Once widely respected as a symbol of American excellence and a global icon of cultural achievement, the Smithsonian Institution has, in recent years, come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology. This shift has promoted narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive." It goes on to say: "Museums in our Nation's capital should be places where individuals go to learn -- not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history."

CNN) — Yale philosophy professor Jason Stanley, who is leaving the prestigious Ivy League university for Toronto as the Trump administration’s battle with higher education in the US continues, said mid-phone interview with CNN while walking the campus, “Hold on one second.”

A group of worried students approached the scholar as he walked the grounds of Yale Thursday in New Haven, Connecticut. Was he really leaving?, they wanted to know.

“I love Yale,” Stanley, who has taught at the university for 12 years, reassured the students. “But Marci, Tim and I, we’re gonna go defend democracy somewhere else,” he said, referring to the Yale colleagues joining him in Canada.

Stanley set off a firestorm at the highest levels of American academia last Friday, when he decided to leave Yale and the United States largely, he said, because of the direction of the country under the Trump administration.

“Suddenly if you’re not a citizen of the United States, you can’t comment on politics if you’re a professor?” said Stanley, who has written books such as “How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them” and “Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future.”

“That’s crazy,” said Stanley, whose academic background is in social and political philosophy and epistemology. “That’s not a free society.”……..

If I were the state and there's a way to do it, I'd hold ALL Federal tax money until that is resolved and use that to fund the schools and anything else they try to cut off. Or stop all cooperation with the federal government. Whatever they can do, do it.

According to the Michigan Department of Education, the Trump Administration altered a deadline to request reimbursement for projects that had already been approved.

    Big picture view:

A news release from the MDE's state superintendent on Monday announced that just after 5 p.m. on March 28, education departments around the country received a notice from the U.S. Department of Education about a change in reimbursement policy.

School districts that had received permission to submit delayed requests for late reimbursement for pre-approved projects will no longer receive the money.

That's because the deadline for those requests was moved from March 28, 2026, to March 28, 2025, with the notice arriving just after the deadline was retroactively moved up.

The money, totaling nearly $42 million, would have been spent on the heating, ventilation, windows, air conditioning, and other building infrastructure for 27 different districts, the news release sent Monday said.

    Dig deeper:

School districts applying for the money had already received approval from the U.S. Education Department.

But in the letter sent by Sec. Linda McMahon, which was included in the MDE's email, the department said it would be changing the deadline by moving it up a year.

The letter said the extension for those requesting the money "was not justified" because the department and school districts had "ample time" to request the money.

But according to state Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice, "walking back a federal commitment to pandemic relief funds…is unacceptable."

"Twenty-seven districts across the state have preapproved financial obligations that met criteria set by the U.S. Department of Education for extending the districts’ deadlines to request reimbursement of these funds. Instead, Secretary McMahon and the Trump Administration abruptly withdrew approval."

The contracts that the districts signed on to included an understanding that the pre-approved projects "would be reimbursed by the federal government."

Without assistance, the MDE says the school districts will be forced to foot the bill for the projects by either spending from their savings or reducing current costs................

    ====================
A parent of a West Springfield High School student told Fairfax County Public Schools leaders her concerns about “obscene” and “inappropriate posters” that lined the hallway of the school.

The display in the school hallway shows pictures of each letter of the alphabet along with a word and a corresponding illustration.

For instance, “A is for abortion,” “T is for trans woman,” and “Q is for queer.”

The abortion poster has an illustration of a hanger.

“Not only does this display violate the district’s own controversial issues policy, it also violates President Trump’s Executive Order, 'Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling.' Are you ready to lose that $168 million in federal funding?” FCPS parent Stephanie Lundquist-Arora wrote to Fairfax County Superintendent Michelle Reid and her school board member.

“The 'ABCs to Me' display at West Springfield High School provides a clear example of the indoctrination of children in their public schools,” Lundquist-Arora told 7News.

“Instead of addressing the divisiveness and absurdity of the exhibit, the district’s superintendent supports it, suggesting that it represents 'critical thinking.' The silence of our school board members in light of this controversy further is absolutely deafening. Our children are being insulted and indoctrinated in their public schools as test scores plummet while our incompetent leaders in Fairfax County stand by and cheer. The light in this storm is that there are brave students standing against this lunacy. They are taking pictures, sharing information, objecting to offensive posters, and refusing to be told what to think. They give me great hope for the future.”

7News asked Superintendent Reid and Fairfax County School Board Chair if they support the display, does FCPS feel like it is insensitive for the display to show a coat hanger on A is for Abortion, who approved the display, and did the Superintendent investigate the display and if so, what was her conclusion?

A Fairfax County Spokesperson told 7News:

“Students in an elective Women’s History class, typically taken by students in later grades, created this project in recognition of Women’s History Month. The finished project reflects the viewpoints of students taking this class.............
