    AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The National Rifle Association announced Friday it has filed for bankruptcy and will seek to incorporate the nation’s most politically influential gun-rights group in Texas instead of New York.

    This is one reason I didn't like the PDB shutting down, because there was a pretty decent topic about the NRA back then. Unless something has changed recently, they had spent a few years encouraging violence against a certain group of Americans. One might say very Trump-like in their approach and wording. I've seen the term stochastic terrorism mentioned.

    Here’s the idea behind stochastic terrorism:
    1. A leader or organization uses rhetoric in the mass media against a group of people.
    2. This rhetoric, while hostile or hateful, doesn’t explicitly tell someone to carry out an act of violence against that group, but a person, feeling threatened, is motivated to do so as a result.
    3. That individual act of political violence can’t be predicted as such, but that violence will happen is much more probable thanks to the rhetoric.
    4. This rhetoric is thus called stochastic terrorism because of the way it incites random violence.
     
    I've been following the NRA the past few years and have become increasingly worried about the role that they have played and continue to play.

    They were super rich in funding for years but their resources began drying up, for a few different reasons. Other Second Amendment advocacy groups saw increases in donations. Second Amendment Foundation, for example, is much more about litigation and rights than political advocacy in the way NRA has become infamous.

    These groups saw their funding increased 25-40% according to what little disclosure is out there (they don't have to, so these numbers - even when announced - aren't absolute). And public exposure of their irresponsibility - not just Russian-related - had an impact.

    The killing of Philando Castile was a pretty major one. The personal enrichment of the leadership is another. There was a litany of them, each chipping away at their pile of cash.

    But it *also* pulled away the more moderate members, the ones who were actually about gun rights. Gun rights and ownership is a huge part of black culture in American history - and it's complicated. That eroded. And legal gun ownership by blacks has increased. But these responsible gun owners were not flocking to the NRA.

    So, the NRA faced an increasing two-fold dilemma: (1) numbers and donations declining and (2) remaining members being more demanding and virulent.

    The Russians identified this a long time ago and began leveraging their influence - the Russian money is really considerable. It's a major, major problem that's right under our noses.

    The leadership in the NRA has made it clear that they are unencumbered by moral complications. So they welcomed the money. BUt even more than that, they need the power and the Russians were able to continue to provide that in the form of continued political presence. And their membership only becomes more dangerous.

    I don't know how they haven't been banned on Twitter, actually.

    What we have is, effectively, elements that do - imo - fit the description of a domestic terrorist group.

    They need to be dissolved. Like, yesterday.

    The National Rifle Association’s attempt to flee a civil lawsuit by the New York attorney general was foiled Tuesday when a federal judge denied its efforts to file for bankruptcy protection in Texas.

    Judge Harlin Hale said the gun group’s petition was “not filed in good faith.”

    “The Court finds, based on the totality of the circumstances, that the NRA’s bankruptcy petition was not filed in good faith but instead was filed as an effort to gain an unfair litigation advantage in the NYAG Enforcement Action and as an effort to avoid a regulatory scheme,” Hale wrote in his ruling.

    The NRA paid thousands for the hair and makeup of LaPierre’s wife. The group even picked up the tab for mosquito control at the family’s house, claiming the expense was for “security purposes.”........

    NRA chief Wayne LaPierre and longtime NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer can be heard in a conference call ridiculing NRA membership who they said may embarrass them, NPR reported.

    "You know, the other problem is holding a member meeting without an exhibit hall. The people you are most likely to get in that member meeting without an exhibit hall are the nuts," LaPierre says in the recording, according to the news outlet.

    PR consultant Tony Makris then responded, "Made that point earlier. I agree," says Makris. "The fruitcakes are going to show up," NPR reported.......
