There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

I saw where the dates do not add up, like, at all. That he “adopted” this 14 year old boy when he was 25, a full two years before he got married. I have not verified this myself but am repeating what I have seen posted many times. He wouldn’t have been allowed to adopt a teen as a single man, according to social workers, so it’s unclear what sort of arrangement this was, how it came about, or really anything at all about this. It just seems weird right now. I would hope there could be more clarity about this, if indeed he isn’t telling the truth about when this child was “adopted”.
This was my first time hearing about this

    Definitely odd

Both the original arrangement and the fact he’s been all but banished and doesn’t merit a mention

Sounds a lot like Matt Gaetz. Maybe it's a thing...

These videos in this thread are truely scary

Mike Johnson speaking on forms of Gov't: "By the way the United States is not a democracy. Do you know what a democracy is? Two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. You don’t want to be in a democracy. Majority rule - not always a good thing."

Mike Johnson: "Recognize God's law as the foundation of civil law. The foundation of our law. God is the foundation of all this... Decentralized Gov't. Next election framed as a battle between Freedom and Socialism. Socialism is EVIL. Why? It violates the owner’s manual."

Mike Johnson talking about the Functions of Government: "Defend the Widows and Orphans. As an aside real quick: you'll notice it doesn't say anything about the welfare state.... What sphere is supposed to care for you if you can't take care of youself: the Church."

Speaker Mike Johnson applauds Clayten Christensen/People of Praise saying "where are the institutions are going to teach the next generation that they too need to take voluntarily choose to obey the laws? Because if you take away religion you can't hire enough police."

Great thread of questions that the press should be asking Johnson, and keep asking them until he answers.

I think most of the questions are great. There are a couple that I don’t think are great. The one about whether his opinion about gay sex being dangerous is based on personal experience is underhanded and dumb. I’m fairly sure one can find evidence of the difference between vaginal vs anal sex health impacts without having to experience it. That’s not journalism.

Also the question about fossil fuel campaign donations impacting his vote is unprovable, so it is also dumb. We know donations are most likely the source of much of their votes on any number of topics, but that isn’t a good question, since he can simply say no. There are much better ways to ask climate impact questions.

Sharing a subpoena issued as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation in 2018, Los Angeles-based attorney Ronald Lebow posted on X (formerly Twitter): "Besides being supportive of the attempted coup, Johnson received money from Russian Oligarchs and was known to Marina Butina, the Russian spy/go between funneling money from Putin to the NRA and Republicans like Johnson."
In a scathing letter, two FEC commissioners, Democrats Shana M. Broussard and Ellen L. Weintraub, condemned their Republican colleagues after the agency only fined American Ethane a $9,500 civil penalty for donating to GOP candidates in Louisiana in 2018 despite being almost entirely owned by Russian nationals.

So a person only 2 heartbeats from the presidency is bought and paid for by the Russian Oligarks. What could possible go wrong...

Yeah, but the majority of the questions should definitely be asked. The DC press won’t do it, however, and we already have a couple of “puff” pieces out there.

I found a post of an interview he gave in The Advocate where he says he “took in” this 14 yo in 1997, and his Wiki page says he was married in 1999. He also says in The Advocate interview that he and his wife took in the boy as newlyweds. So either he doesn’t remember the year he got married or he’s lying about it. 🤷‍♀️

So Johnson has already lied about his intentions. So much for the idea he would be a straight shooter.

So, the removed funding would have paid for a free tax filing service? That would tremendously help the middle class, so the GOP is against it.

Screw the working class so the rich can flourish...the GOP way! Typical.

The recent effort to target high-income individuals has been boosted by an increase in federal funding provided by Democrats last year through the Inflation Reduction Act. Republicans have criticized the amount of money the IRS is getting, and future funding is uncertain.

They try so hard to tell everyone that they don't care for "main Street" Americans. But but but but....this will reduce spending and the deficit....gotta lack critical thoughts to buy these republican argument Everytime.

Without new tax codes, the irs with it's $80 billion over 10 years [right, McCarthy gutted this number...much less now to give the IRS more resources to do this] will collect $600 billion annually from uncollected taxes. I've heard upwards of $900 billion from another source.

Most of the money, though, is for stepped-up enforcement — to help the IRS collect more of the estimated $600 billion in taxes that go unpaid every year, much of it owed by rich people who under-report their income.
