There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

A benefit of all this nonsense for republicans...Their latest BOMBSHELL REVELATION about the Biden Crime family hilariously blew up in their faces, but no one is talking about it because of the Speaker chaos.

Short version: The impeachment inquiry finally found a direct payment to Joe Biden. A $240,000 payment from his brother James in 2018 that he laughably called a "loan repayment." This was it. They had Joe Biden receiving almost a quarter of a million dollars from his brother that was obviously a laundered payment from some foreign entity to be discovered. Unfortunately for them, they didn't go a little further back in the bank records. Had they done that before making their huge announcement, they would have found bank records showing that in 2017, Joe Biden wired $200,000 and $40,000 to his brother James which was documented in the bank records as a loan.

Yeah, and he would have lost all of his Republican support in doing so. Just not a tenable situation for him to do that. The only way this works is if the Democrats work something behind the scenes.
Possibly, but it is worth a try. I don’t think he necessarily would’ve lost all of his Republican supporters.

I don't typically go to CNN.com but I was looking for schedule info on the next Speaker round. And I saw this piece and it makes a truly salient point for the Steve Bannon's of the world, including our own SFL and that is that if the "Uniparty" was real, we wouldn't be having this chaos. All the GOP needs to do to shut out the MAGA obstructionists that brought this one would be to move a moderate through with some concessions to the Democrats. Or even if a small number of GOP members felt compelled, it would only take five of them to join with Democrats.

But these things aren't happening for the same reason that the US remains substantially divided in the composition and agendas of the parties. Just because some institutionalists recognize the need to move business forward on operational matters doesn't mean there is a uniparty. The idea, like much of Bannon's viewpoint, is cynical, patently false, and pretty clearly aimed to generate discontent.

Next up: Mike Johnson, a man who intentionally mischaracterized statutory authority under the electoral votes counting process to object to what were otherwise proper certifications of electoral counts and attempt to disrupt the transfer of power after a presidential election.

At least it's not Clay Higgins? :idunno:

The House GOP showing they have no intention of facing up to their efforts to overturn a presidential election with any integrity at all. Look at the smugness on the face of the guy who might be Speaker.

    Another azzhat.

Well, it looks like Johnson is going to have enough votes to win. No Republicans have broken ranks yet and they're more than halfway through.

Ugh, we have a worse Speaker than McCarthy. Can't say I'm shocked with the state of the Republican Party is in.

McCarthy was actually the best the Republicans had to offer because despite him showing Trump his belly, he is an institutionalist.

Frankly, this is just a mess and will be for a long time. Decades of sewing hatred for our institutions are barring its fruit, and it's all rotten.

Johnson voted against the continuing resolution. Prepare for lots of blackmail attempts from Republicans. Johnson will probably want to shut down the government. It will be a mess. Democratic interests will pay the most. That's why I kept saying that Democrats needed to get behind a reasonable Republican. I knew eventually Republicans would settle on a much less desirable candidate, and now we have him. Democrats didn't play the game well. Maybe they can convince voters to vote out Republicans, but the House will now do everything in their power to torpedo the economy, and they will blame Democrats. Will they be able to convince voters? I think they will be able to do so, because they are better at messaging. Truth will suffer.
