At midnight, September 30 into October 1, the federal appropriations will lapse and the government will shut down. That's next Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Despite promises to do so, the GOP has not advanced a budget or spending bills for Fiscal Year 2026 and the only way the government will remain open will be for Congress to pass a continuing resolution (CR). It could be a "clean CR" which means to simply extend for a given period of time at existing funding levels, or it can be burdened with whatever provisions they choose to tack on. Last week, the House passed CR with a few provisions mostly about enhanced security for Congress and federal officials. But it only keeps the government open until November 25.

The Senate cannot go to full vote without cloture and the cannot hit cloture without 60 votes - so the Democrats do have leverage with respect to the filibuster. Schumer has said they want to go to the table to negotiate to at least get some repeal of some of the Medicaid and other provisions of the "Big Beautiful Bill" - but Trump rejected their request to meet with him and Thune has similarly been unwilling.

It seems likely that Schumer is going to have to choose between supporting something like what the House passed with no gains at all for Democrats, or push the government into shut down to see if that brings more leverage to get something. Democrats are clearly calling for a more aggressive approach but Schumer also knows that shutdowns are bad and it will be difficult to pin this on anyone else but himself and Senate Democrats.

I really think the appetite by Dems and Independents are to stand their ground. Rs had no problem doing it so why not now?

Im sure its a thin layer of ice but if navigated correctly, could yield some results.

Politically, it's not a great position for the Democrats. Either they are the ones who shut the government down instead of passing a clean-ish CR, or they caved.

historically, yes. And i cant imagine the fervor in which Fox/Newsmax et al will run 24/7 coverage on the fact that the Dems are responsible for the shut down.

But Trump refuses to meet with Schumer on anything. Said as much in a Truth Post yesterday. So if there is no will from Rs to meet at all, cant pin all on Ds.

And i think many are starting to understand that in certain instances, you must fight fire with fire.

Yeah, I think that's the Democrats position for now: You need 60 votes to pass the bill, so you have to include us at some point to get our agreement to join the vote.

Trump rejected that and Thune may simply say "take it or leave it".

I think we a relatively clean-ish CR, it would be fair to blame the Dems mostly if the government shuts down.

Sure, but we all know it wont be "clean-ish" lol

And i just posted Trumps Truth post- he immediately goes on the offensive, derides their "asks" ( doesnt state a single one ) and says not worth his time to meet with any of them.

So, if you publicly state you wont even meet to discuss, you lose leverage when it comes to responsibility.

What portions of Trump's agenda will be impacted by a shutdown?

Thats how the game is played.

Lay it all out there. Dems must stop playing the "good guy" role and at times, go on the offensive. This is a start.

I think they should simply make releasing the unredacted epstein docs the hill they die on. Trump would rather the country burn then release those docs.

Surely some elements of ICE and other agencies will have to cease operations, especially if the shutdown last more than a month. If so, Republicans will feel the pressure. Once a budget is passed, if it includes funding for all of the people that were fired, then most should get their jobs back, since the’ll be the most qualified. If not, don’t you think they will have grounds for lawsuits? They may be able to hire contractors, but those contractors will need qualified people too.

And I would be completely unsurprised if the contractors cost them more and were less efficient.
